Master Woden, an exalted alchemist, has agreed to investigate Hugo and find out why Macula, Hugo's curse, has awakened again. Hugo, however, appears to be reacting poorly to the Magister's treatment and experiencing convulsions. Beatrice informs us that a particular plant called nightshade can help Hugo, but is sold by an herbalist located in the Butchers' District, a dangerous area filled with enemies and rats.

Follow Luka to the Butcher's Quarter

After the initial cutscene, follow Luca, who seems to know the way to his destination. As we make our way through the city, Amicia will notice that everyone has disappeared as a result of what Hugo woke up.

Leave the city

We are now in the Butcher's Quarter, with a disgusting stench pervading the area. Continue down the stairs, past the shops, until you reach a small crowd protesting the street closure.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to move on and we must find another way to move on. Luckily for us, Luka spots a back alley, but we need a way to squeeze through. Go back up the street a bit to notice a gap between wooden beams that you can crawl through.

Then slide down the slope, only to end up in a stinky pit full of carcasses and flies. Make your way through the water and climb up again. Then squeeze through the beams behind the wooden cart and open the chests for new upgrade materials.

Then, together with Luka, push the cart off the slope to secure a path forward.

However, this causes the rats to attack.

Light the first brazier and the one under the pig carcasses, then drop the ignited pot halfway across the two braziers to get close safely.

Departure from the city

On the other hand, shoot the mount to drop the carcass, then toss a rock at a nearby bag of sea saltpeter to create a cloud that extinguishes flames nearby. This will make the rats run towards the meat, which will allow us to move on.

Now push the cart inside the house and park it next to the brazier. Then knock down the carcasses in the room, roll the saltpeter cart over to the fire source, and finally launch the saltpeter cloud by shooting the rock at the cart itself.

The path has been cleared and it is safe to cross the room and climb the stairs. Take the upgrade materials from the chest in the room, the knife from the severed large head, then exit the room.

Here we will be threatened by soldiers.

Get rid of him with a headshot, only to find out that the soldiers are killing the townspeople, purifying anyone who might be affected by the curse. New swarms of rats will soon break out of the ground, and Luke will come to our aid with saltpeter, which will allow us to create Extinguis, a new type of ammo that douses lanterns, braziers and torches, allowing us to use rats to our advantage and eliminate enemies in our path. Hold as instructed. :r1: / :rb: to open the selection menu, then press: right: twice and hold :x: / :a: to create Extinguis.

Now aim and shoot at the torch to put it out, causing the rats to run amok towards the soldier. Do the same with the torch carried by the second soldier a little higher.

Then continue moving to the left of the alley. Here, take the stick from the cache in the corner and enter the side room. Open the chest for materials and light it with the torch. Then climb through the window and go up to the next brazier.


Goal

Departure from the city

From here, open the material chest and drop Ignifer to the nearest brazier.

Keep going up the stairs and open the big chest, opening toolneeded to upgrade Amicia's equipment at special workbenches.

Exit the room and continue upstairs and two more soldiers with torches will appear. When two soldiers stop, create a pot Extinguis and throw it at them to summon a cloud of saltpeter.

While the rats are eating their dinner, head back down the street to continue forward. The gate is closed and we must find another way. Enter the only available door and climb up to activate the winch that raises the gate.

Then quickly run back down and cross the gate. We are finally outside the city.

Get to the herbalist's forest

Run down the road to find two houses on your right. The first house on the right has a locked garden gate that can be opened from one of the two sides of the fence by breaking the chain.

Once you do, enter the garden and interact with the grave to unlock Memory #3/21: Grave. Now enter the abandoned forge and approach the workbench to use it.

Using a workbench

Workbenches allow Amicia to upgrade her sling, alchemy, equipment, and tools. Being your main offensive tool, we suggest you prioritize, but it doesn't really matter as you need to max them all out for loot targets. So, pick the one you like and keep moving forward.


On the outskirts of the city

Get to the herbalist's forest

Exit the forge using the ladder found near the workbench. Light the lantern and enter the village in front of you.

There is a spearman here trying to kill you, so be sure to eliminate him quickly.

Now take the stick from the cache, light it with the torch in the village and go to the brazier near the slaughtered cow carcass.

From here, light the torch near the window of the village to your left and enter it.

Keep moving forward. Immediately outside use Extinguis both on the fire and on the torch held by one of the guards for the rats to kill them immediately.

Now light the fire again and from here look at the wooden shed nearby, where you can shoot through a hole in the facade to drop a rat animal carcass.

Then approach the next bonfire and there should be a small church in front of you. From here, you should be able to put out the brazier near one of the guards.

Then take a stick, light it up and go in the direction where the guard was and light up the brazier you just doused.

There is a chest next to this brazier with some materials if you like, but to access it you will have to light the pot. Next, enter the church and exit from the other side, be sure to open the chest opposite the exit.

Kill the incoming guard holding the spear and light the lantern outside to cross the space and open a new chest.

Save the herbalist

As you approach the end of this area, you should notice three more people coming out of the gate. One of them is in a bathrobe, he is a herbalist. Saving him is an optional goal. However, there are no consequences whether you save him or kill him. He doesn't appear again during the story. To save him, light the torch at the gate where he comes from. Headshot an unarmored enemy and lure the armored one towards you, then use Extinguis on his torch as he passes through the rats. The trick is to shoot the torch at the gate when the herbalist is walking near him, otherwise the rats will eat him (because you kill the two enemies holding the torches, which also kept the rats away from the herbalist). If the herbalist dies, Luka will make a negative comment about it, but other than that line of dialogue, there are no consequences.

Get to the herbalist's forest

After all the guards have been dismantled, in the last building on the left is tool chest.

Then shoot the saltpeter cache near the wooden cart, where the herbalist was supposed to put out the fire and attract rats to the bodies.

Now light the fire again and grab the stick from the cache.

Light it up and get to the lantern near the wooden door, and then climb over the tree trunk and squeeze through the crevice at the end of the path.

Now we have reached the herbalist's village. Before entering his hut, check the pots hanging from the large oak tree on the left side of the area. One of these pots contains a flower. Knock it down with your sling to collect Hugo herbarium sheet #2/12 Chamomile.

You can now resume your search for the purple star shaped star. Check out the various plants outside the hut and then, at Luka's prompt, open the door and go inside. Approach the window to trigger a new cut-scene. Amicia is demoralized to move on and something is clearly happening to her.

But since our trusted alchemist Luke is next to us, he volunteers to take her place and continue his search for the nightshade plant. However, Luca is caught and Amicia must go to his rescue.


At the herbalist

Find and save Luka

From the starting point, stay crouched and keep walking until you see a ladder on the right. Learn the patrol guard's movements and when he's not looking, move on to the next patch of vegetation.

You should now see a guard holding a spear that can be pulled out with a headshot.

From the same bush, try to kill both guards patrolling the flower field above. Before you continue climbing up, there is a chest on the left side.

Now go upstairs or use the white-painted ledge to reach the field of white flowers. Make your way past the guards and the greenhouse to find a door that will lead you to Luca. Upon entering the room, you will notice that Luka is being thrashed by a guard, who can be shot in the head.

Survive the attack

Shortly after regrouping with Luka, you will be ambushed by several guards. Throw rocks at the saltpeter sacks or take out the incoming guards with headshots.

When a protected enemy joins the ambush, you must shoot the sacks of saltpeter to blind him. This will make his head one-shot killable.

The rest of the advancing enemies will be holding spears, and can easily be killed with a headshot. However, Amicia, the victim of her newfound rage, continues to ignore Luka's advice to just leave, leading to their capture.


In prison

Dungeon Escape

Luca and Amicia are now in prison. Amicia is troubled by her killing instincts, but Luka is by her side, providing a new escape solution.

Exit the prison cell and approach the fire in the middle of the room. Hold :l1:

As soon as the guards go blind, start running upstairs. However, Amicia's gear has been confiscated by the guards and must now be collected. Climb up through the window to get to the rooftop overlooking the fort.

Turn right onto the roof and walk along the wall, then up the wooden ramparts.

There's an archer enemy that can't be killed since Amicia is without her gear, so crouch and sneak past him by climbing through the new window and then head down the stairs.

Stay crouched and when you see the brazier ask Luca to throw some Stupefacio:l1:

Enter the tower and climb through another window. Continue along the scripted path until you can climb down the white-painted ledge, then through the window and immediately crawl under the table to avoid being spotted by the guard coming down the stairs.

When Amicia says it's safe to go, start crouching upstairs and open the door.

Run along the ramparts until you see an opening on the left. Go down through it to access the depot.


Squad

Find things

Climb down the ladders and make your way all the way to the back of the depot to collect your gear.

You will also receive knife, which is necessary for Secret Chest 1/10 right opposite the place where you get Amicia equipment. Secret chests provide rare and useful upgrade materials and also act as workbenches, but they can only be opened with knives, so never use them during encounters.

Fort Escape

Regroup with Luka in front of the door and open it. However, there are too many guards, so we need to find an alternative way to escape through the area.

Find a way to create a diversion

Luckily, Luka points out that he can use his super Stupefacio with ballista inside the warehouse. Now we just need to knock it down.

Using a ballista to create a diversion

First, climb back up the ladder and pull down the ring to free the ramp. This gives you access to Memory #4/21: Our house.

Then grab the cart at Luka's position, pull and push it to the left of the workbench, below the white-painted ledge.

Climb up and control the handle. However, the ballista is too heavy and if the crank is released, the ballista will bounce back up. Ask Luka to control the winch and break the chain to free the ballista.

Finally, push the ballista towards the door.

Luka will now replenish the ballista with Stupefacho and instruct Amicia to charge it. So, interact with the handle on the left side of the ballista. Then press / :a circle: :x1: to let go.

The heroes can now escape and return to Hugo, Beatrice and Master Woden.

This concludes chapter 3 "The Burden of Blood" in A Plague Tale Requiem. Chapter 4, "The Protector's Duty" now begins.
