Oculus Quest: Clarifying the Software Update Process
Facebook has refined its process for updating Oculus Quest to the latest software.
Facebook reps reiterated in a recent forum post that “with each software update, we roll it out incrementally to ensure the stability of the software.” This full rollout typically takes “several days” and starts with a “percentage of users” when the company posts notes about release.
Version 9 update for Quest brought the option to manually update the Quest software by visiting "Settings > About > software update to check if there is a software update available." Basically, then if Facebook publishes release notes for the new version of the Quest system software, you'll still have to wait a few days before that manual update button sees an available update.
This week, Facebook began releasing version “10” of the Quest software with new features such as improved Chromecast streaming. Various discussion threads on the internet have pointed to the confusion, although not all buyers understand how updates to the Quest system are made.
“We start each rollout with a percentage of our global users and increase that percentage over time,” the forum post reads. “Other users in your area receiving the update are not a good signal that the update should be available for you as well, but you can usually expect to receive the update within a few days.”
So, to pin it down, Facebook says, “If there is an update available for your Oculus Quest or Oculus Go device, it will automatically download the update if the device is on and in sleep mode. If you are currently using the headset or it is completely turned off, the update will not be downloaded during this time. The next time the device is turned on and left in sleep mode, it will download the update. We recommend plugging in your device to make sure it has enough power to complete the update process. You can also use the new manual software update option to search for available updates.”
