It's a new year and new series (and seasons) in the anime genre are appearing in the Netflix anime library. Expect a mixture of new epic fantasy, crime drama and horror series to make up for the loss of major titles in 2022. The platform's biggest achievement is securing all 74 episodes of Monster, the psychological thriller anime series. If you've never seen it, you're missing out on a lot because it's a fantastic adaptation of the entire manga and well worth watching.
No matter what mood you're in - or if you're looking for where to start your anime experience - there are things on the list that won't leave you indifferent. The list below is offered in random order (because it is simply not possible to rank it according to the degree of fascination). Just be aware that it focuses on canon anime and is limited to what is currently streaming on Netflix.
Sky Invasion (High-Rise Invasion)

The exception is the visual stunner, which has a unique way of bringing in humor, chaos, and action. The story balances difficult questions about what makes someone human with action-packed, suspenseful sci-fi drama. Directed by Yuzo Sato, Exception brings the original story of Hirotaki Adachi aka Otsuichi (Gothic: Love for Death) to life with unconventional animation and character designs that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but its original story and gripping pace make this cosmic horror not forgettable.

Tekken: Bloodline (Tekken: Bloodline)
A surprisingly simple adaptation of the Tekken 3 storyline, Tekken: Bloodline follows fifteen-year-old Jin Kazama (Kaiji Tan) on his quest to avenge his mother. You don't have to be a video game buff to find this six-episode arc worthwhile. It showcases character designs and a story structure that resembles the gameplay of the source, but the real draw lies in the slow unfolding of Jin's family history and his struggle to honor his mother and fight for control of his own destiny. There's mystery, intrigue, and enough fighting to make it all very interesting.

An anime that may become relevant in a matter of decades due to accelerated robotization around the world. Because of this, some professions may soon disappear altogether. According to the plot of this anime, there are practically no people left on Earth. Except for one girl named Sarah. The action of the plot takes place in the small village of Edem, the population of which is made up exclusively of robots, who harbor sincere hatred for people. Robots believe that it is humanity that is capable of destroying the Earth with its own hands, and therefore in Eden “man” is a dirty word.

The action takes place in 2045, Children in orbit, also known as "Extraterrestrial Boys and Girls", follow two children born on the Moon and three from Earth. The story takes place in outer space (where the Internet and artificial intelligence are widespread) on a Japanese commercial space station. A massive accident leaves this group of children stranded with little hope of rescue. They must rely on their wits, limited communications, and what is available to try and avert further catastrophe... and eventual death.
Written and directed by Mitsuo Iso (Ghost in the Shell, Rurouni Kenshin and Blade Runner: Black Lotus), this two-part sci-fi series not only takes the anime into space, but looks straight into the distance and asks if whether people? Iso directly targets the ticking clock of Earth's ability to adequately support human life. He then reflects on whether humans are capable of doing what is necessary to save themselves. While this philosophical split shouldn't come as a surprise given that it's Mitsuo Iso, The Orbital Children combines fluid animation, a striking color palette, relativistic character design - which makes great use of its superb cast - making it into a coming-of-age story and a full blown existential ( and literal) crisis not to be missed.

New anime series on Netflix
January 1 means good things for anime viewers. A slice of life from Kimi ni todoke: From Me To You, joins the library with two full seasons (38 episodes), The Way of the House Husband returns for a second season (20 episodes) and Monster, one of the best anime series of the 2000s years, broadcasting its first season (74 episodes). The second season of Vinland Saga hits the platform on January 9 (24 episodes).
