HBO Series The Last of Us - Actors, Release Date, Plot, etc.
Naughty Dog's The Last of Us is officially getting a TV adaptation thanks to HBO's TV genius. Here's everything we know about it, including the lineup, release date, and more.
First released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and later released on PS4, The Last Of Us is often considered the best zombie game of all time, as well as the best PS exclusive. It follows Joel's story after an outbreak of the Cordyceps virus has taken over the United States. He is tasked with transporting Ellie, a young girl free of the disease, across the country in hopes of developing a cure.
Following the success of the first game, Naughty Dog announced a sequel to the action-packed zombie survival game that was released on June 19th. In addition, HBO is also creating a TV show based on the series, featuring ND VP Neil Druckmann, director of last year's hit Chernobyl Craig Mazin, and director of many episodes of Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead Men by Johan Renck, who was honored to direct the pilot for The Last of Us. The musical accompaniment of the future show is handled by the author of the original soundtrack for the game Gustavo Santaolalla (Gustavo Santaolalla)..

All these names are already telling us that we are waiting for not just another mediocre "passer", but a serious story. In addition, Neil Druckmann is unlikely to let his brainchild be spoiled.
Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the games, shared his thoughts on the upcoming series and explained why development started at all:
Was the adaptation of The Last of Us supposed to be a feature film?
In case you didn't know, The Last of Us was originally going to be a feature-length movie. The director of the original Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi, planned to bring this idea to life, but the tape was in limbo for too long, which eventually led to the start of development of the series.
Craig Mazin, who took over the reins from Sam Raimi, said he always had the feeling that the story couldn't be told in two hours and that it needed to be adapted into a series format. After all, here we are talking about a long journey and the development of relationships between characters. Mazin pitched his vision to Druckmann, and together they convinced HBO that it was the right decision.
Pilot Director
As we wrote above, Johan Reik was assigned to shoot the first episode of The Last of Us, who, in addition to the series Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, managed to have a hand in Chernobyl, Vikings, Bloodline and many other projects .
Johan himself, in an interview with Discussing Film, said that he took on the "pilot" only because there is no room in his schedule for continuing the stories already started, and he wants to shoot something really new for himself.
The series based on The Last of Us is a difficult task
Adapting one of the most highly regarded and loved by gamers is not an easy task. Such a project must be approached with full seriousness and caution.
Neil Druckmann briefly described the challenges of adapting the game's story to the small screen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
Will The Last of Us series tell the stories of both games?
So far, HBO has given only a brief synopsis of the series: “The story takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, who has gone through many troubles, will have to take the 14-year-old girl Ellie out of the repressed quarantine zone. At first, the task seemed to him a trifling job, but soon everything turned into a cruel and heartbreaking journey. The heroes must cross the US together and survive."
In early March, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the series would mostly follow the story of the original game, but additional storylines that would better reveal the events of the sequel should not be ruled out.
In addition, the same The Hollywood Reporter noted that the authors of the show are considering the possibility of not being limited to one season and continuing the plot in subsequent ones. This means that we are not waiting for a mini-series in the spirit of Chernobyl, but a long-term story that can stretch for several years.
Which of the playable characters will we see in the series?
It would be foolish to tell the story of The Last of Us without the participation of the original main characters - Joel and Ellie. Joel was announced almost immediately after the announcement of the start of work on the series, and on March 8, International Women's Day, Neil Druckmann on his Twitter confirmed Ellie's appearance on the show.
In addition, in the same tweet, Druckmann named several more heroines: Ellie's girl from Left Behind - Riley, Tess and Maria. Druckmann also hid one of the names with four squares, it is quite possible that in the series we will see the heroine from The Last of Us 2, whose name just consists of four letters - Abby.
Cast
While the show has no official casting yet, fans are already sharing their dream actors with might and main.
The most coveted actors for the role of Joel now are Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who played Jaime Lannister in the Game of Thrones, Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler. The original Joel, Troy Baker, did not stand aside either. The actor said that he thinks Josh Brolin would be perfect for this role.
For the role of Ellie fans "woo" actresses such as Kaitlyn Dever (Kaitlyn Dever), Sophia Lillis (Sophia Lillis) and Sadie Sink (Sadie Sink).
Actress Caitlin Deaver was the first to respond about her participation in the show. In an interview with Collider, Deaver revealed that she had seen fan posts on social media and would like to star as Ellie.
Release date
When will we be able to see the fruits of the creation of the director of the game version of The Last of Us and "Chernobyl" Craig Mazin?. This question still remains unanswered and it is unlikely that we will know the exact date in the near future. After all, it is not possible to start full-fledged shooting now due to the ill-fated coronavirus.
According to Mazin, the idea of a series has been discussed for a long time, but Druckmann's preoccupation with developing a sequel to the game did not allow him to fully start writing the script. Now that The Last of Us 2 has gone on sale, it's possible that we'll have a lot of rumors and details coming from the creators in the near future. Let's stock up on patience.
