Lucifer

soap opera

Received from Fox, who ran the show for three seasons, DC Comics' loose adaptation of Lucifer now lives on Netflix, where its fifth season has just debuted. Lucifer is essentially asking the question, what if the real Lucifer got bored with Hell and moved into his own nightclub in Los Angeles? It's actually a twist on police procedural, with a bit of dark comedy and a strong lead actor, Tom Ellis. Not most the best show on Netflix, but definitely enjoyable enough, especially in this not-so-new-show-heavy time.

The ghosts of the house on the hill

soap opera

Acclaimed upon release, this horror series follows a family whose lives are turned upside down by paranormal activity in an old mansion. Years later, the family comes to terms with their traumatic experience of living at Hill House. Based in part on the book by Shirley Jackson, this truly chilling and groundbreaking Netflix series is a terrifying cinematic treat, the perfect hour for Halloween this year.

The second season of The Haunting of Hill House is also in development - it's an anthology show, so it will be based on a different story, The Turn of the Screw, and be called The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Damned

soap opera

"Cursed" - decisively not such a good fantasy drama as The Witcher, but this alternative take on the Arthurian legend looks great, especially at a time when almost nothing is released on streaming services. After the death of his mother, Nimue (Katherine Langford) teams up with the extremely handsome warrior Arthur (Devon Terrell) in search of Merlin.

It definitely has a youthful literary vibe at times, but that's okay - while Cursed isn't exactly family fun (you do see Merlin's ass), it's less abusive and bloody than Game of Thrones. Curiously, the legendary Batman writer and artist Frank Miller, who also co-directed the film Sin City, was involved in the creation of the show. We hope that The Damned Season 2 will build on what's here.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

Umbrella Academy

soap opera

Netflix has shown it doesn't need to partner with Marvel to make a great superhero show, as this quirky adaptation of the comic book series created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba proves. At the Umbrella Academy, superpowered siblings - the Hargreaves - are reunited after the murder of their adoptive father and face a possible apocalypse together.

With a great cast that includes the likes of Ellen Page and Robert Sheehan, this light and fun show nearly makes up for the lack of new Marvel content coming to Netflix. The second season of The Umbrella Academy is also available now, in which Hargreaves is in a completely different place, and it's even better than the first season.

The last dance

soap opera

Finally released on Netflix in July 2020, The Last Dance was the biggest and best sports documentary of the year. Featuring full access and never-before-seen footage from the time, this eight-part series focuses on Michael Jordan's basketball career, specifically his final season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98.

Narrators include Jordan himself, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman, each discussing their role in the team's runaway run. Even if basketball isn't really for you, understanding what made such a successful team is exciting, as are the nasty backstage clashes. This is one of the best Netflix documentaries you can watch right now.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

Dark

Dark is an action-packed show filled with time travel that becomes downright addictive if you give it a chance. We recommend watching all three seasons of this Netflix sci-fi show in one extended session over several weeks so you can keep a close eye on what's happening. We also advise you not to read more about it: stop by and be surprised how well thought out and composed this German-language series is.

This is the best Netflix show to watch right now if you're looking for a drama that will give your brain a workout.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

Unsolved mysteries

soap opera

Netflix's latest true crime article is a revival of one of the staples of American TV, and it falls into more trashy genres. Unlike the original show, which focused on urban legends and crime, it simply follows cases involving real people, usually with some extra curiosity element to generate more audience theories about what's going on. It feels like they were created to turn everyone into armchair detectives - and although it seems slightly irresponsible, Unsolved Mysteries is still an interesting watch on Netflix.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

Hannibal

soap opera

Netflix US has streamed all three seasons of Hannibal, and you're in for a treat if you've never seen it. Although this crime thriller was canceled after season 3, it doesn't really matter: this adaptation of Thomas Harris' books about cannibal Hannibal Lecter tells the full story. FBI Specialist Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) works closely with psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) to solve serial killer cases while Lecter secretly commits heinous crimes.

However, what starts out as a stylish treatment room becomes a more complex, serial show in Season 2. By season 3, adapting the story of the Red Dragon, Hannibal becomes surprisingly avant-garde, creating a bizarre and gory romance between Graham and Lecter. Creator Bryan Fuller infuses this show with his own sense of style, and a fantastic supporting cast includes the likes of Laurence Fishburne and Gillian Anderson.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

The Witcher

the witcher

Netflix's first big fantasy series is an adaptation of The Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski, which have already been adapted into a series of popular games. If you were disappointed by the end of Game of Thrones, this is a treat. Henry Cavill plays monster hunter Geralt of Rivia in a story that spans decades and wars between nations, although the best parts of the first season are the "monster of the week" episodes in which Geralt fights a dark creature. They usually have twisted endings and it's a treat.

The Witcher doesn't quite feel like "prestige" television like Game of Thrones, but that's not a bad thing. It's an enjoyable, funny fantasy series that still looks very expensive. With a great supporting cast and a well-drawn world, The Witcher season 2, which is in development in 2021, will have a lot to look forward to.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

American Crime Story

Both seasons of American Crime Story FX are among the best shows on Netflix, although they are listed on separate entries based on the case they are based on. The first, The People v. O.J. Simpson, takes a detailed look at a shocking murder trial involving legal teams from both sides. It features amazing actors including Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, John Travolta and the excellent David Schwimmer.

Meanwhile, the second, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, follows the assassination of famed fashion designer by fun-killer Andrew Cunanan (brought to life in a frightening and thrilling way by Darren Criss). The series then returns to show what happened to Cunenan's previous victims.

Seasons on Netflix: 2

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

soap opera

The latest documentary on Netflix to make you ask, "How can this be real?", Tiger King takes you behind the scenes of a major feline tourist attraction and it's eye-opening. What starts out as a documentary about an eccentric with lots of big cats in cages and a lust for fame quickly escalates into darker, more serious territory.

You will remember what happens in seven episodes, and you will never forget a number of characters that you will meet in this series. It's the most talked about documentary show in years, making Tiger King a must-see, even if its latest episode with Joel McHale is well worth checking out.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

Ozark

soap opera

From the start, Ozark was struck by comparisons to Breaking Bad for its tale of a seemingly good guy who gets sucked into deep criminal activity. But it's a very different beast, not least in its visually distinctive titular setting. By the third season, it was forging its own path as a family drama.

Marty Bride (Jason Bateman) moves his family to the Ozarks, Missouri, where he has to launder $500 million for a drug lord who threatens his family, including his wife, Wendy (Laura Linney). This dark adult series is a breakout drama for comedy veteran Bateman, who also directs episodes every season. You need to be in the right frame of mind for that, but if you like shows like Fargo, you'll find these watches irresistible.

Ozark is one of the most underrated series on Netflix, and worth watching just for Wendy's character development and Linnie's performance.

You better call Saul

soap opera

Breaking Bad, the Better Call Saul prequel spin-off has been around for almost as long as its predecessor, with its fifth season streaming right now on AMC. You probably caught the first few episodes of the first season in the hype around Breaking Bad's finale, but it's worth giving the spin-off's later seasons the same level of attention.

Jimmy McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman is an ongoing, subtle character study that includes a whole ensemble of memorable new faces, notably Jimmy's older brother Chuck (Michael McKean). It also gives us more time with Breaking Bad favorite Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) and other iconic figures from the series that we won't reveal here. It has a bit more dark humor than the previous series and is definitely worth catching up on before it ends in 2021 with Season 6 of Better Call Saul.

Sharp peaks

soap opera

Peaky Blinders follows the Shelby crime family, led by patriarch Tommy (Cillian Murphy), in post-war Birmingham, UK. This is a real "prestigious" show, designed to mythologize British history in the same way that Deadwood does for American history.

Although the series begins in 1919, later seasons jump ahead by years. Season 2021 of Peaky Blinders, originally slated to run for five seasons, is currently in development and is likely to arrive in XNUMX.

Very strange things

soap opera

When it comes to television and film, the 80s is the decade of nostalgia. Filmmakers can't get enough of Ghostbusters, space suits and Sony Walkmans.

Stranger Things is another brilliant tribute to this era. Based on Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King, the story revolves around a small town, a group of friends who go missing, and a dodgy science lab. Writing anything else would give away countless twists and turns in a show full of brilliant spooky fun.

The third season was the hit of last year and it was fantastic, and each subsequent series of episodes only strengthens your investment in the history and friendship of these children. Filming is underway Season 4 of Stranger Things .

Seasons on Netflix: 3

Breaking bad

soap opera

Breaking Bad is more addictive than the meth suggested by Walt and Jesse, it's great TV viewing. The initial plot is simple: A straight-forward teacher is told he has cancer, and to make sure he leaves his family with the best possible life, he turns to drug production and dealing.

His madness has its own technique, because in the end he understands it quite well. Creator Vince Gilligan has created such a good group of characters that he is currently designing the same world again with Better Call Saul, which arguably reaches similar heights and is also available on Netflix as mentioned. Netflix also released a Jesse movie sequel in late 2019, El Camino.

Orange is the hit of the season

soap opera

Orange Is The New Black has concluded its seven-season series, and it's a great story of life in a women's prison. It was one of Netflix's first major originals, along with House of Cards Season 4 and Arrested Development, and it lasted so long simply because it was so popular.

Tensions and problems with the US penitentiary system are brought to the fore, and while the comedy of the first few seasons continues throughout the film, it's covered in a fair amount of drama.

Seasons on Netflix: 7

BoJack horse

soap opera

BoJack Horseman just wrapped up his six-season series and, well, its finale left one of our writers in tears for most of the weekend.

Following the life of washed-up actor Bojack as he struggles with alcoholism, toxic relationships and family problems, the series is as touching as it can be heartbreaking. The play on words and amazing animation to keep everything in balance make the series a must-see.

Seasons on Netflix: 6

Matryoshka

soap opera

Natasha Lyonne stars in this dark comedy as Nadia, who keeps dying and relives her 36th birthday in a surreal time loop - much like Groundhog Day.

With a cynical and witty exploration of life and death, the Russian doll quickly switches between laughing out loud and crushing sadness - it's something to watch. In June 2019, Netflix announced that it had renewed Russian Doll for a second season, which is well deserved.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

mind hunter

soap opera

David Fincher isn't new to Netflix, having directed the first ever episode of House of Cards, but Mindhunter is Fincher going... well, the complete Fincher. It is based on the book of the same name by John Douglas and describes the life of an FBI profiler whose job it is to track down serial killers. Set in the 70s and early 80s, the three protagonists interview famous serial killers in an often tense showdown.

Fincher is also very hands-on, directing four episodes of the first season and three of the second. Unfortunately, Season 3 "Mindhunter" is "indefinitely" but we look forward to its return, given that this is one of the director's finest work to date.
