Overwatch Announces Radical Changes to the Competitive Map and Hero Pools
Overwatch will release significant updates to its Hero and Map Pool systems after receiving feedback from fans and the community.
Map pools were introduced at the end of 2019 and Hero Pools were added in March 2020. Now, the developers say they've received a lot of feedback from players and fans to make significant changes to both.
Based on community feedback, the developers will be implementing drastic changes to map pools, some of which have been suggested previously, and make hero pools more consistent.
In an April 9 blog post, the developers explained that they will be "merging" the hero pool between the Overwatch league and the main game.
« From April 13, we intend to solve this problem by creating a single, unified pool of heroes,” the developers said. "Allowing both the Overwatch League and Competitive Play to mirror each other as closely as possible and make the browsing and playing experience more consistent."
In order to determine the hero pool each week, Blizzard will look at the hero selection rates from " high-level matches in competitive games of the previous two weeks."
Heroes that are selected above a "certain threshold" will be in the cabin for a week; the more heroes selected, the more likely they are to end up in the next hero pool.
Based on all this, the developers will randomly remove one tank, two DPS and one support from the game. Heroes cannot be kicked out of the game for two weeks in a row, so there will be bans for a different character each week.
We'll find out which heroes will be removed at the end of the Overwatch League matches on Sunday. In the weeks when OWL does not occur, we will find out about it on Monday morning. The new hero pools will still apply on Monday in both cases.
The developers also acknowledged that the map pool didn't work out exactly as they planned and will be launching all maps other than Paris and Horizon Lunar Colony available as competitive play.
Actually it was an idea suggested by the players , and the developers have hinted that they will be working on Paris and Horizon to "improve their game" in the future before adding them back to the rotation.
We don't have any word on when we'll see Paris or Horizon get an update, but it's good to see that Blizzard is still willing to tweak maps to make them enjoyable for players.
This update is truly a win-win for the community, as the Hero pool will have more consistency (hopefully) and will have 19 maps to play, minus the two least popular ones.
