How to defeat Eghil, the winged dragon boss in Elden Ring

Eghil, the winged dragonFlying Dragon Agheel) is an optional boss in Elden Ring that patrols the lake, so here's how you can defeat this fire-breathing wyvern.

The most feared dragon located in the ruins of the Burnt Dragons in Limgrave

Elden Ring is home to many terrifying bosses, but one of the most intimidating is Eghil, the winged dragonFlying Dragon Agheel). Unlike Margit, winged dragon is one of the optional bosses game, which means that the hero can choose whether to fight this giant dragon or avoid combat.

However, those who are willing to take on this colossal beast will be rewarded for their efforts. Whether you want to get the Dragon Heart or just aim to kill every boss in Elden Ring, you will need to prepare for this encounter.

Luckily, in our boss fight guide Eghil, the winged dragonFlying Dragon Agheel) has everything you need to destroy this fire-breathing dragon without giving your life for it. So, if you're having trouble taking down a scaly enemy, then read no further.

Location of the Flying Dragon Agheel boss in Elden Ring

Eghil, the winged dragon located on the northwestern island in the lake Eghill. As soon as you get close to the sacrificial fire, this mighty dragon will descend from the sky and begin to scour the surroundings in search of prey.

How to defeat the Flying Dragon Agheel boss in Elden Ring

Top Tips for Eghill the Winged Dragon Boss:

  • Using Spirit Summon or Co-op can make this fight a lot less frustrating.
  • Remember that you can climb during this fight and it's especially useful to get back to the Dragon as it flies away.
  • The claw of the beast is mostly ineffective during this fight due to the predominance of water, so you can try a different Spell if the Prophet class is selected.
COMBINED STRATEGY (EASIEST)

The easiest strategy is to mount your horse and ride close to him, dealing damage to the dragon's wings and legs while trying to keep moving as much as possible. Leave as he flies away, find him as soon as he lands again, and then make your way towards him, taking a wider arc if he breathes fire to avoid taking damage.

You can stock up on HP flasks for this strategy and put on your heaviest armor, as weight doesn't matter when you're on horseback.

STRATEGY CLOSE COMBAT

This can be an extremely difficult fight for melee characters because hitting the Dragon's head deals the most damage to it and is difficult to land. Using a long weapon like the Bastard's Sword, Ordovis' Greatsword, Winged Spear, or Pike can make this noticeably easier, so it's best to use one of those options.

The strategy is to approach the dragon and provoke it to flap its wing. Dodge and then attack his head if you're fast enough, or his wing to take away some XP from him. You need to get him to repeat this as many times as you can, and hopefully you get him down like I did. At this point, you can poke the dragon directly in the eye, which will deal a lot of damage to it.

When he does his double bite attack, one bite right after the other, dodge the second one and spin the head. This should give you some effective hits if your weapon is long enough and you didn't hesitate to attack. Then return to the starting position and try again to cause a flap of the wing.

If it's up in the air to breathe fire straight down, you need to roll away from the affected area as quickly as possible. This attack is very hard to dodge and will most likely kill you faster than any other attack.

If he gets up and starts breathing fire in a line, you need to get to his left side to avoid the fire. It's a readable attack, but sometimes you're in the wrong place where you can't get left so you can still die. If necessary, you can use rocks and buildings for cover.

If he rises into the air and hangs there for a second, NOT BREATHEING FIRE, then he will pounce on you. Wait until the last second and dodge him, then attack for light damage.

If you get behind him for any amount of time, he will most likely do a whiplash with his tail, so make sure you block him or roll over him. This happens 99% of the time if you are directly behind it, so be prepared for it.

MAGIC AND LONG-TERM STRATEGY

The strategy for this fight is somewhat similar whether you're in ranged or melee combat, so you'll need to play in a similar way while avoiding the same attacks. However, it is easier to fix his head and hit him with magic. The Beast Claw doesn't work well in this encounter as it takes place in a lake and Beast Claw doesn't work in water.

I highly recommend using a shield in your hand so you can block when needed between throws. And you will need to have 4 flasks of FP so you can use as much magic as possible, which means you won't be able to heal, so try not to take more damage than you need.

Remember that you can use Northern Mercenary's Ashes to help you, and with a little luck, he will actually stay alive for most of the fight. Sometimes the dragon breathes fire and immediately kills it. When this happens, it's probably best to die and restart the fight.

Finally, you can fire spells or easily use your bow from a horse, allowing you more mobility while staying out of harm's way. It may take you a little longer to defeat him this way, but it's definitely safer!
