What is Hololive? VTuber Group Explodes YouTube and the Internet
In 2021, VTubers have become an internet sensation. There is one group that reigns supreme: Hololive. This is how a Japanese company, with over 50 creators under its banner, broke YouTube and the Internet with its idols.
Everyone knows the names in the online entertainment industry, from Felix "PewDiePie" Chellberg to Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson are highly respected and have a multimillion-dollar army of subscribers. However, new online stars are becoming more and more "virtual".
The VTuber craze has taken YouTube by storm, and one company is at the forefront - and that's Holo Live . The Japanese talent agency employs more than 50 authors, and they all conquer the Internet and break records. It doesn't look like VTubermania will slow down anytime soon.
What is VTubers?
VTubers are a relatively new phenomenon on the Internet. Short for “virtual YouTubers,” these are online artists and idols who, unlike your regular streamers, use a virtual avatar as their “camera.”
This trend originated in Japan in the early 2010s, but has not received widespread to creation of Kizuna AI at the end of 2016 . Considered the first VTuber in history, Kizuna has surpassed all streamers' expectations and brought virtual reality to entertainment on a massive scale.
After that, VTubers exploded all over the world. There are over 10 known VTubers at the time of writing. These VTubers are also placed with talent agencies, the largest of which is Hololive.
Some of the world's biggest streamers including Pokimane и PewDiePie, even cashed in on this craze at its peak in 2020. However, even since then, the industry has only continued to develop, becoming one of the most popular YouTube trends with billions of views per month.
Rise Holo Live in 2020 year
Hololive is a division of Cover Corp, a Japanese startup founded by Motoaki "Yagu" Tanigo. Yahoo, often referred to as the father of VTubers, began exploring the concept of these virtual artists in 2017. Inspired by Vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku . Since the debut of Tokino Sora in September 2017, Hololive has gradually expanded. One VTuber became two, and by the end of 2019, dozens of creators suddenly found themselves under their banner. Expansion into China , Indonesia и English-speaking countries in 2019 and 2020 has transformed Hololive from a niche Japanese group to a truly global experience. Although all Chinese VTubers Hololive with since then "graduated" (code word for retirees) due to controversy, the company has done its job of bringing virtual entertainment to the forefront. The influx into the Western market in 2020 led to the growth of the trend that we know today. Hololive English's first five VTubers - Mori Calliope, Takanashi Kiara, Ninomae Ina'nis, Gavre Gura, and Amelia Watson - took over YouTube, leading to total insanity in September. There is no exact answer why VTubers became popular. The use of a virtual avatar may be part of the story, giving shy individuals who used to be on camera a way to express themselves. VTubers themselves are incredibly successful. Eight out of 10 highest paid YouTube stars (based on Superchats, the platform's donation system) are VTubers. Collectively, 30 million subscribers are subscribed to Hololive VTubers, and this number is growing only when other recruitment agencies are included. The Future of Hololive and VTubers
With a wider Western audience involved in VTubers —whether new talent like those at Hololive or established streamers like PewDiePie using the technology to their advantage—the future of VTubers looks even brighter in 2021. Hololive's rise to YouTube doesn't end there. The group held their second round of auditions for the English VTubers in February 2021 and their grand expansion plans don't stop there. What this year will bring for Hololive remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - VTubers are here to stay.List of Hololive VTubers
