The Polish site PolskiGamedev.pl published an article about the development of Dying Light 2 behind the scenes. Techland has corrected some of these messages in response to the site's claims.

Dying Light 2 is one of the most anticipated games from Polish developers. Unfortunately, we already had to swallow one delay back in January, and we haven't heard much from the game since. The atmosphere around the launch is unlikely will improve article on Polish site PolskiGamedev.pl [only in Polish] about possible problems with the development sequel Dying Light The text is based on conversations with Techland employees.

Chris Avellone and the Polish case

One of the highlights of the ad Dying Light 2 At E3 2018, Chris Avellone became the main narrative designer for the game. However, according to some sources that contacted PolskiGamedev.pl, even at that moment the cooperation between Techland and the well-known screenwriter was not going well. According to one anonymous employee, Avellone wanted a layered, empathic, and expansive story, but the people leading the project had to reduce the difficulty of the in-game factions, among other things. The source even claims that there is a de facto war going on about the inclusion or deletion of characters, faction stats, and even quests. Another person also mentions a problem with Avellone himself: the missions he designed for one region were supposed to look like a quote, "like he was doing quests for New Vegas".

Adrian: Techland Preacher

One character is regular in the statements of employees who are critical of the state of the project. This is Adrian Ciszewski, head of the creative team at Techland, allegedly called the company's preacher ("he walks around the company and preaches what the project should be"). Basically, he and Pavel Marchevka have to interfere with Avellone's script.

The interlocutors emphasize that Chishevsky really "did a lot for Techland", but, in their opinion, he may not be at ease in his new position. This should manifest itself in successive "iterations", which in practice means the constant change of certain elements. We've heard similar arguments in connection with the scandal behind the scenes of Red Dead Redemption 2's development, and as at the time, the staff argue that the lack of consistency is "burning" the creators.

Working on Dying Light 2...

… doesn't look as bad as we might conclude from the above paragraphs. At least on the technical side. One of the creators in charge of the visuals said the game looks good, with the graphics, combat and overall gameplay close to completion. However, another source comes back to complain about Ciszewski and the general lack of concept, constantly "breaking down" the very foundations of the game in order to make changes. This person even claims that there is no so-called vertical slice, that is, in short, a fragment of the game representing all the most important elements of the gameplay.

Microsoft will claim Techland?

When Techland delayed the launch of the second Dying Light, no new release date was given. Apparently, the creators themselves have no idea when this will happen. According to some reports, the launch DL2 possible at the very end of this year, but this will be due to financial reasons, and not to the implementation of the developers' intent. Most doubt this date and bet on next year, especially in the context of the company's possible debut on the stock market. Unless rumors of a takeover of Techland by Microsoft are confirmed, it is, but employees and representatives of the Polish company have clearly denied these rumors.

What about the second project of Techland, an open-world fantasy RPG? According to employees, the promise of its launch "in a year or two" after Dying Light 2 will not be fulfilled. This is due to the participation of the Warsaw team responsible for the game in the work on the second Dying Light . In this situation, according to one of the interlocutors of PolskiGamedev.pl, the debut of this unannounced position will take place no earlier than 2025, and this is “the most optimistic scenario”. The source also said that the project will use mechanics from the series Dying Light , but at the same time it will be a completely different game (and not related to the resurrected Hellraid).).

It should be emphasized that the interlocutors of the site did not draw everything in dark colors. The developers praised two new team members: Mark Albinet and Eugen Harton. The former took over as a director who previously held at Ubisoft while working on Assassin's Creed: Unity. The latter previously worked for Bohemia Interactive. Both communicated with PolskiGamedev.pl thanks to ... a site that contacted the PR department of the Polish company. The editorial team spoke with their supervisors, Krzysztof Sazon and Ola Sondej, in connection with the PR recommendation email, which has become a common reminder for employees. Both also allowed the editor to receive statements from developers and match them with anonymous posts.

Here's how Chris Avellone got in touch, among others who denied that his story had changed beyond recognition. Yes, he mentions subsequent "iterations", but stresses that this is a normal part of the creative process, and he was talking about changes in the past tense. He had no conflicts with Adrian Tsishevsky. Also, Bartosz Kulon (the game's lead programmer) presented a much warmer image of the leader of the Techland creative team, crediting him, for example, with permission to introduce one of the most important elements of the series " dying light ": Coulomb also assured that the allegedly non-existent vertical cut had been ready for years. .

It is impossible to objectively and definitively determine the reliability and validity of the information provided. The editors of PolskiGamedev.pl received assurances that Techland takes employees' statements seriously. We received a separate statement from a Polish developer:

“Every day we make sure that our employees are happy to be with us and want to grow with us. We are proud that many of them have been developing their careers at Techland for many years. We believe that this is due to the good working atmosphere in the team, among other things. This text contains various opinions - both from our employees and from anonymous people. Regardless of the tone and the author, every information contained in it is equally important to us, and we now carefully analyze all the problems mentioned.
