Originally announced in April 2015, the film was to be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed and co-written by Gil Kenan. However, after several delays, Warner Bros. nevertheless launched the project, and Kenan was no longer involved in it. In March 2017, it was revealed that Blumhouse Productions would take over production of the film. Initially, the script and direction were supposed to be in the hands of Chris Columbus, but he later left the project. In October 2022, Columbus was replaced by Emma Tammy, who took on the role of director and co-writer.

Principal photography for Five Nights at Freddy's began in February 2023 in New Orleans and wrapped on April 3 of that year. This date was an important moment for the film's team as the final scenes were captured and they could begin post-production.
