Subnautica Below Zero will never support VR

vr

Subnautica is often regarded as one of the prime examples in PC gaming of how to present VR support with the ultimate sense of presence. Everything from the soundtrack, visual fluidity and head tracking are excellent and provide a serious feeling of being inside an alien planet. You spend most of your time diving into the ocean as you explore and create things, so the feeling of wearing "goggles" on your face only adds to the realism. Sure, Subnautica only has keyboard and mouse or gamepad support (no motion controllers), but VR is still arguably the best way to experience it. This week, a new standalone expansion dubbed Below Zero cost Steam Early Access for $19,99, and so far first impressions are very positive, but one important feature is missing: VR support.

You see, VR was added late in the development of the original game by popular demand, and it's just not in the scope of the expansion project. According to the developer on the Steam forums, they don't think they have the time or resources to do justice to the VR add-on:

“Unfortunately, we don't think we can do justice to VR. Not because we don't love VR or all our own headsets…. We wanted to improve the work with SN1, but the time and the number of available staff is extremely limited. We just don't want people with bad VR experiences to be below zero, so it's likely we won't if we don't find the time. Making the game itself is a top priority.”…..

Maybe if the gaming community starts demanding this feature more intensely, they will change their mind, but at the moment it seems unlikely that Below Zero will have VR support. More information about the expansion and the base game itself can be found on the official website and read our full Subnautica review here. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
