Strategies for Using Legend Wattson in Apex Legends

apex legends

With the advent of Wattson, Apex Legends has a new and very important defensive nature. Make sure you know when and where to deploy Watson's tools and abilities!

The new Legend introduced in the second season of Apex Legends is arguably one of the most important characters. Watson's defensive abilities can negate a lot of damage and movement in a short amount of time if deployed correctly. With that in mind, we've put together a handy gameplay and strategy guide to make sure you're maximizing all the electric fences and interception pylons you'll need to keep your team safe.

Watson Tactical Ability: Perimeter Security

Good placement of Perimeter Security nodes can shut down enemy travel through various areas.
Good placement of perimeter security nodes can close enemy travel through various areas.

Watson's tactical ability, Perimeter Security, allows her to deploy nodes that create an energy fence. With this ability, you will try to prevent or slow down the enemy from entering various places, or make them take risks and take damage while trying to cross a fenced area in a hurry. The fence will automatically turn off when allies cross it and then turn back on immediately, so you don't have to worry about cutting off your teammates just as much as your enemies. However, you need to carefully consider where your nodes are located, because enemy bullets or melee can destroy them, cutting off power and protection in this section.

  • Here's an idea for where you should place Watson's tactical abilities in any given ApexLegends game.
  • Stand a little deeper on doorways to avoid being seen over corner slopes, if possible.
  • Place far enough apart that the fence beams were longer, and the opponents would have an awkward placement of both ends of the energy barrier.
  • In places where it is not easy to get high ground and just jump over or otherwise go around the fence without harm.
  • In places where your teammates will not constantly walk in close proximity to disable the fence beam and accidentally miss enemies

Ultimately, the goal is to make your fences as annoying and unwieldy as possible for enemies who don't want to just rough their way in, ensuring they're not in a position where your teammates can accidentally render them useless. If you carefully consider your node positioning, you can really be a pain in the rear for enemy units that want to play aggressively against you.

Ultimate Watson Ability:

The moment an Interceptor Pylon is placed, it will keep players safe from grenades and other explosives entering its field.
The moment an Interceptor Pylon is placed, it will keep players safe from grenades and other explosives coming into its field.

Watson's ultimate ability, Pylon Interception, is a dual mechanism that serves as a deterrent to explosive enemies and a boon to allies and Watson. Once deployed, the Intercept Pylon creates a field of action. Allies standing in the field will have any damage to their shields healed over time. Watson's security perimeter node cooling will also be reduced while she is close to the pylon.

For enemies, any decree that enters this field will be immediately destroyed and their effect nullified. The list of victims of the interceptor pylon is as follows.

  • All grenades, including Arc Stars, Thermite Grenades, and Frag Grenades.
  • Caustic ultimate gases from garnet oxides
  • Explosive canisters from Bangalore Rolling Thunder ultimate
  • Shells from the defensive bombardment of Gibraltar

The Interceptor Pylon can be destroyed by gunfire or melee attacks, so it's good for Watson to place the Pylon in a location where enemies don't have clear line of sight or can't easily approach it. When placed effectively (against walls near doors or in nooks and crannies in stone walls) a pylon can pretty much disable any enemy effort to protect you from explosives and ults, as well as allowing you to get out of a defensive position.

When To Pick Wattson & Synergies

Wattson's Permeter Security can be shut down by destroying nodes. Other defensive characters like Caustic can deny access to these opportutnies.

Simply put, Watson is not designed to be aggressive. Instead, it is designed to completely contain aggression. She won't be safe when facing enemies like Bangalore, the Wraith or Octane, and if she is forced to drop her defenses and run away, she will find herself very limited. Watson is best chosen to be part of a team that knows when to squat down and hold the seat.

Of the rest of the Apex Legends roster, Wattson is probably the best fit for Caustic in this regard. Where it can deny entry and make it difficult to enter certain areas, corrosive gas traps can make access to any equipment even more dangerous. Likewise, the Pathfinder would be a suitable ally because when the robot can set up the Zipline on a high elevated spot for sniping and vision, Watson can deploy a fence around the entry point to the Zipline, which will cause enemies trying to follow you to damage themselves in the process. . Lifeline is of course a great addition to any team, but between Watson's Pylon Healing Shields and DOC Lifeline's Drone Healing Health, a team can fully go back to 100% in both respects without spending any recovery items.

Wattson shines best in situations where enemies are forced to contend with you in tight positions with little access and line of sight to her gear.

As Octane does everything for a fast attacking style, Watson gives a huge amount of utility to many teams with what she can do. Her best pick is when the team is ready to hold the spot, but for those who don't have the patience, Watson could bring a lot of good to the Apex Legends arena. We expect her to be a powerful force throughout the Apex Legends 2 season.
