New World offers a lot of interesting mechanics for players to dive into. Fishing is one of them, and when it comes to this feature, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

New World has been a breath of fresh air in a rather stagnant genre as Amazon Games' first major project recently entered closed beta, and there's a lot to love about the game.

The multiple factions in the game were a great feature, and the in-game wars are something we all get excited about. But, if you want to gain experience for certain missions, you might want to go fishing.

At first glance, this seems simple, but there are other components that you need to become familiar with.

How to fish in New World

Fishing is one of the many mechanics that players will be able to take part in while being in the wild in the magnificent environment of the New World. It follows the same principles of harvesting, mining and hunting animals, and it will also have its own separate mastery tree to accompany the game.

In order to fish, you will need to follow these steps.

  1. Get a fishing rod, this can be done by completing a quest outside of Westward town, or by buying it at the auction.
  2. Find a body of water where you can cast your line
  3. Press F3 to start the fishing process and you will need to hold M1 to cast the line. Here you will also be able to equip bait if you have it in your inventory.

While this is a simple process, we are going to talk about a lot more when it comes to fishing.

Where can I get a fishing rod?

The first step is to acquire a fishing tool, namely the Fishing Rod. There are several ways to do this:

1. Craft / Craft in the Workshop (Workshop). There are currently 5 fishing rods available to obtain with the Engineering skill. To make the very first Wood Fishing Pole, you will need:
1x Green Branch (Young Tree)
1x Hemp
Resources are very easy to find outside of any city.

The main difference between the rods is the maximum casting distance (meters).

2. Quest / Task. The wooden fishing rod will be a reward for completing the very first fishing quest "Fishing With Shields" from the chain that starts at the fisherman in the pond outside the town of Windsward. You can also get a few additional fishing rods in this chain, but it will be difficult for a new character to advance far along it because of the danger of distant regions to which they have to go.

3. Buy a fishing rod at the Auction. Trade point in the Tools / Gathering tools / Fishing poles section.

Once you get your fishing rod, make sure you have it equipped.

Where to find and equip fishing bait in New World

A fishing lure is one of the attachments you can attach to your rod before you cast. This will drastically increase your chances of catching fish, and even bigger ones, so it's worth taking the time to collect some decent bait.

Players will be able to find bait in the New World in briar bushes or reed bushes, which are usually located around lakes and reservoirs.

Where to go fishing?

You can fish almost anywhere there is water, but location is everything! There are two types of water: salty (ocean and swamps) and fresh (rivers and lakes). You will be able to get different fish from each type of water. Each region has its own assortment of fresh and salt water fish.

Holes/hotspots (small halos of rings in the water with fish splashing in them) are most effective when fishing.

What is Hotspots?

Fishing points (hotspots) are special fishing pools that spawn inside hotspots. Casting the line into the Hotspot pool will increase your chances of getting rarer fish. A fishing hotspot is like a mining node. Its diameter is about 2,5 meters and fish jump out of it. It looks like this:

hotspots. Fishing points. Hot spots. Popular and efficient fishing spot

How good is fishing in hotspots?

If you're hunting Uncommon, Rare, or Legendary fish, then your first priority should be fishing in hotspots. The quality of what you get really depends on the type of spot you are fishing.

There are 3 levels: Wide (1 star), Rare (2 stars) and Secret (3 stars).

Broad Hotspots / Rare Hotspots / Secret Hotspots. Chances of catching fish in hot springs.

The types of fish you will catch depends on the region you are in. In hotspots you will catch fish of any size.

Step 1 - How to start fishing?

With a equipped fishing rod, go to the body of water where you want to fish. Now press F3 on your keyboard to activate fishing mode. In fishing mode, you will be able to use an overlay with several additional options:

[LMB / LMB], (HOLD / Hold), Cast / Cast

This option tells us that if we press and hold the left mouse button, a fishing mini-game will start. When you're ready to fish, press LMB/LMB

[R] Equip bait

Pressing R on your keyboard will open the Fishing Bait window. Use LMB to select the bait you want to use.

It is not required for fishing, but when used properly it is beneficial.

[F3] Exit fishing

To exit fishing mode at any time, simply press F3 again. In which case it will not work to attack with a fishing rod, you must first remove it. normal abilities will also not work in fishing mode.

Step 2 - Fishing Mini-Game (Distance Matters!)

As soon as you hold down the left mouse button, a swing mini-game will start and end when you release the LMB. The point is to calculate the casting distance.

In short, your total casting distance will affect how easy it is for you to play the fish in the line tension mini-game.

If your cast is very short, every fish you land will be a problem. Even the smallest one. Not increasing the distance to the maximum, you only complicate your fishing.

To reach the maximum casting distance, release the mouse button when the indicator is at the very top of the scale. You will see the word "MAX" and hear a small chime when you reach the maximum distance.

By keeping the left mouse button pressed, it takes about 2 seconds to reach the maximum point.

There is currently no reliable indicator of how depth affects fishing. There is evidence to suggest that this may improve the chances of catching fish of a certain size. Very shallow/Very shallow for small, shallow/Shallow for medium, and deep/Deep for large.

However, that doesn't mean you can't catch big fish in shallow water or small fish in deep water.

There is also evidence that depth affects bite time. Deeper is faster, shallower is slower. But there is no firm conclusion on this topic.

Step 3 - The Bite mini-game / Bite

After casting the line, another mini-game starts. All you have to do is sit and wait patiently until the bite starts.

How long to wait depends on a number of factors. If you use bait, this will greatly reduce the waiting time. If you fish in a hole / Hotspot, you will bite almost instantly.

When it bites, all you have to do is press the left mouse button to hook the fish.

Right before a bite, the float indicator will start shaking and the message will appear: Get Ready!/Get Ready! You can get a little confused here, so don't do anything
until you see the float icon change to a fish icon and a progress bar of green, then yellow and red will run across his areola. And instead of the inscription Get Ready!
Wait and Hook will appear.

After a successful hook, a round indicator with a progress bar will appear, and you will hear a loud sound as the line is pulled. It will say "Hook!".

At this stage, you need to press the left mouse button as quickly as possible before the progress indicator reaches zero. It starts at 100% and green and counts down to zero. If you left-click too early or too late, you will lose your catch and your bait will be eaten. This is where practice will help you.

Step 4 Tension Mini-Game

The trick to this mini-game is to prevent the line from being pulled too tight by pressing the LMB (left mouse button).

By holding the left mouse button, you will begin to pull the line. The tension indicator will grow and change color from green to orange to red when you hold LMB.

When you release the mouse button, the voltage will decrease and the indicator will decrease again and turn green again.

If you just hold the left mouse button all the time, the indicator will turn red, and the line will eventually break and you will miss the prey.

In short, this mini-game is like a tug-of-war between you and the fish. Hold LMB until the indicator turns orange, then release until it turns green
and so on until the fish is caught.

Each fish has its own demeanor, the circles diverging from the fish in the water indicate the intensity of its resistance at this moment it is better to lower the line a little (press LMB less intensively) and let the fish calm down, as the circles disappear, you can continue aggressively fishing out the fish of your dreams.

Congratulations on your catch! Let me remind you again that not all fish are available in every region. Each region has its own set of fish for both salt and fresh water. This guide is really only a superficial overview and serves as a starting point for those new to fishing in the New World.

Successful bite!
