Is Kingdom Hearts 4 based on Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
Square-Enix introduced Kingdom Hearts 4, shocking the world for the franchise's 20th anniversary with a new trailer showing Sora in a Tokyo-like metropolis. The setting is Quadratum based on Tokyo's Shibuya neighborhood, but why are Kingdom Hearts IV fans wondering if it's based on Square-Enix's canceled Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
The Quadratum originally appeared near the end of Kingdom Hearts III, in which Riku dreams of it and Sora is transported there. DLC for Kingdom Hearts III has a battle with a character named Yozora, who was supposed to be the main character of Versus XIII but now bears an unmistakable resemblance to Noctis from Final Fantasy XV.
Versus XIII was originally planned to be released on the Playstation 3 as an add-on to Final Fantasy XIII. Square-Enix intended to focus on themes relating to "fantasy based reality". However the project was renamed to Final Fantasy XV.- too late release for that generation and too complicated production.
Given Quadratum's unabashedly realistic aesthetic and Yozora's story implications, it's reasonable to expect the Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XIII universes to be connected, but we're eager to find out for sure.
Wait and see!
