FromSoftware Hints at Elden Ring Sequel or More Franchise Projects

FromSoftware hinted at Sequel to Elden Ring after the huge success of the game. Here's what the developer shared.

Elden Ring sold a staggering 12 million copies in just under three weeks, already eclipsing earlier Souls games in terms of sales figures. This means that both Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware will consider the game a huge success and are likely already planning more games set in the Interearth.

Of course, Elden Ring is the spiritual successor to Dark and Demon's Souls, taking the brutal combat mechanics of those games and dropping them into a lush open world. Such a successful launch often guarantees a franchise's future in gaming, and that seems to be exactly what's happening.

Elden Ring is FromSoftware's most successful Souls game.

Will there be Elden Ring 2?

In a joint press release with Bandai Namco, FromSoftware described Elden Ring's success as "a fantastic start to a new franchise." They further said:

“A lot of effort has been put into creating Elden Ring so that we can exceed the expectations of our fans around the world. We will continue our efforts to expand the brand beyond the game itself and into everyone's daily lives."

Future Elden Ring expansion

This is a rather teasing statement from both companies. This not only strongly suggests that Elden Ring 2 is likely, but also suggests that Elden Ring will be part of a larger media franchise.

Previous FromSoftware games have had additional media made around them, but today's Elden Ring success will force Bandai Namco to figure out how else they can expand the universe. It can lead to comics, novels, movies, or TV shows.

Some fans will be wary, although Miyazaki's storytelling, or the narrative style of the Souls games in general, lends itself very well to the gaming environment. As such, it may not translate well to television or other more direct forms of entertainment. It's still an exciting thing to consider though.

More importantly, though, it looks like the new Lord of Elden shouldn't be too comfortable on his throne. A new, extinguished warrior may soon be riding the Interearth to challenge them in the Elden Ring sequel.
