Baldur's Gate 3 Companions, at least for now, are origin characters that you can't currently play as.
Each has a specific class, and they will all complement your group in different ways. Of course, as in any decent RPG - and in BG3, of course - not only their classes are important.
This is because each character has their own personality, plus individual likes and dislikes. Some of them also strongly dislike each other. If you want to find each of the five Baldur's Gate 3 recruitable characters in the Early Access version of the game and see what they're good at, I've got everything you need below.

SHADOWHEART
- ➤Location: at the end of the beach full of corpses trying to get through the door, right after the tutorial.
- ➤Class: Cleric (Deception)
Tenegart is a rather cold person and she won't trust you as much as she can leave you. However, she does deal massive damage and can even heal. Dumb and to the point, Shadowheart are serious comrades who just want to get things done.
As a cleric, she's a fantastic all-rounder, far more so than any other companion, which is probably why you'll meet her first. She has a variety of offensive, support and healing spells that can completely turn the tide of a battle. Not only that, but her attacks deal a surprise blow to the character, which can also help you survive.
Shadowheart will probably be the character you most need on your side in Baldur's Gate 3. However, if you try to make her happy, she will get mad if you get too far away from your goal.
GALE
- ➤Location: after your first fight with Shadowheart next to you, at a nearby warp point.
- ➤Class: Wizard (Challenge)
Honestly, Gale is one big old pile of meat. When you first meet him, he will flirt awkwardly and from now on you will want to punch him in the face. Of course, he has his dark secrets.
Unfortunately - and I really mean unfortunately - despite being a condescending scoundrel, he's also a pretty good wizard. While it lacks the versatility of Shadowheart, it more than makes up for it with sheer attack power and even a weird spell to confuse enemies.
ASTARION
- ➤Location: hiding from the monster next to your first battle after meeting with the Darkheart.
- ➤Class: Rogue
The entry of Astarion is by far the most interesting. You will have no problem with the terrifying enemy he is hiding from when you find him, and once you face him, you can force Astarion to join you.
Astarion is a very talkative and flirtatious gentleman. He just so happens to be a vampire, though not one that has ever had much chance of having fun. He leads a rather closed life for a bloodsucker and a robber. His class makes him invaluable for taking advantage and consecutive sneak attacks if you can make the most of your position and element of surprise.
This also means he's good with pockets and locks, as well as being able to charm you during some of your more difficult conversations. Just watch your back - or rather your neck - if he joins you, just in case.
LAE'ZEL
- ➤Location: in a cage suspended in the air after meeting with Gale.
- ➤Class: Fighter
While you get Shadowheart to join you first, you will first encounter the fiery Lae'zel in the tutorial - she helps you get through the rather unfortunate events there. However, you won't be able to get her to join you properly until you free her from the cage she's been placed in by a couple of Teiflings.
As a Fighter, Lae'zel is good at one thing—and practically only one—hitting very hard. As she levels up, she will gain many new abilities, but her joy in life will always make sense in almost everything. She also has a rather useful Magic Hand ability as she is also a Githyanki which can also be used in combat to push enemies from afar.
Lae'zel - does not tolerate fools, and the main problem is that she thinks that everyone is fools; If you disagree with her consistently, you will probably make her angry. However, if you side with her, you'll probably piss off everyone else instead.
VILL
- ➤Location: A young tiefling is training at the camp.
- ➤Class: Warlock
As they say, where there is Will, there is a way out. In this case, you can find your Will in the camp you will face currently on the bad end of the goblin invasion. He will train the young tiefling to fight, as he has proven himself to be a powerful Edgeblade. More than just a tadpole, Will is also a powerful Warlock, so he has some pretty demonic friends.
Despite this, he is a particularly friendly and (seemingly) honorable guy. As the Edgeblade, he is good with a sword, but he can also be good at some creepy and demonic spells. This makes him deadly at any range, and depending on how you level him up, he could very well be the strongest hitter on your team.
His personality makes him prone to noble deeds, and if you go against this, he will most likely be disappointed in you. Keep this in mind if you want him to be as friendly as possible.
