With Oculus Quest 2 You Can Stream Games Without Any Cables.

The next Oculus Quest 2 update includes built-in wireless live streaming from a PC, 120Hz mode, attacks of the addition to Infinite Office.

Oculus announces, that wireless PC live streaming, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Infinite Office improvements will come to Oculus Quest 2 with the v28 software update that the company says will be released soon.

Infinite Office is a feature that Oculus includes as part of Oculus Home that allows users to work in a virtual environment. With the v28 update, Infinite Office will have an experimental feature that will allow users to add a virtual desk where their real desk is, letting users know where they can sit and place real physical objects without leaving VR. Quest 2 will also be able to show a virtual view of the Logitech K830 keyboard, although Facebook says it will have support for more keyboard models in the future.

Another feature introduced with the update is the ability to wirelessly stream games or apps from your desktop PC. Oculus calls its feature Air Link Wireless Live, after the Link cable you can use to connect your headset to your PC. This feature will only work well with some network settings - the instructions to turn it on are pretty clear, as you'll need good Wi-Fi for an acceptable experience, and the Link cable will still provide the best visual quality.

Facebook says it's not ruling out porting Air Link to the original Quest at some point in the future, but says it's "focused on optimizing Air Link to provide the best possible experience for Quest 2 in the first place."

We do know that the original Quest hardware is capable of streaming live video to a PC because independent developer Guy Godin built it into his Virtual Desktop app. The application provides users with a virtual space to use their computers and also supports game streaming over Wi-Fi. However, here we must talk about differences.

If you thought Virtual Desktop's description was a bit like Facebook's Infinite Office, you're not alone - Godin was talking about that Facebook was essentially embedding its app idea into its own Oculus experience and then offering it for free for some time. . His cause may have been aided by the fact that Facebook blocked an update that allowed virtual desktops to be used over the air until earlier this year, which required users to go through a complicated process of downloading non-published applications in order for the functionality to work.

Influential resource UploadVR spoke to Godin about Facebook introducing Air Link and got this comment from him:

“In 2017, Facebook copied the core functionality of Virtual Desktop to the Rift and incorporated it into their platform, essentially making my app obsolete. I won't be surprised when they do it again in Quest. Last year they copied the YUR fitness tracking app and released the Oculus Move; essentially killing the company. They also released App Lab because they saw how popular SideQuest was. That's what they do. If you have a popular app on Quest today, expect Facebook to copy you and leave you in the dust. As for the fate of Virtual Desktop in Quest, we'll have to see how Facebook's solution competes. Judging by the number of issues that Oculus Link is facing today, I'm confident that Virtual Desktop will remain a valuable solution for some time to come. I also have a lot of cool features that I can't wait to share with the community."

Despite warnings about copying ideas on Facebook, he remains confident in his competitiveness. How well Air Link will perform initially, and how quickly improvements will appear, is an open question.

The update also includes an experimental mode for a 120Hz refresh rate, up from the current 90Hz and the original 72Hz. This is a slight delay from the expected March launch of Oculus . In the post, Oculus hints that many won't try it right away - the Quest 2 software will still run at 90Hz, so you won't be able to see what it looks like until the developers release builds of their games and software that can run. at a higher refresh rate. However, the wait may not be so long: Guy Godin already tweeted, that it has a 120Hz virtual desktop update ready to go when V28 becomes available.
