Hellblade 2 trailer shows off photorealistic faces and thrilling giant fight
It's been quite a while since fans received any news about the highly anticipated Hellblade 2. While the latest clip doesn't provide any useful information about the adventure game's gameplay mechanics or release date, it does focus on the photo-realistic facial animation that players will be able to enjoy in game courtesy of Unreal Engine and its MetaHuman technology.
While Hellblade 2 was first announced back in 2019, Ninja Theory has been constantly pitching in since then, with fans getting the official gameplay trailer at The Game Awards 2021. In addition, there was great hope that the game would make its way to players later this year.
Hellblade 2 uses Unreal Engine's MetaHuman technology for its animations
Presented at State of Unreal at the 2023 Game Developers Conference, a short clip shows Melina Jurgens followed by a close-up of Senua's character. She looks menacingly into the camera, saying:
“Now I can see through your darkness. I see through your lies. I'll show them how to see me do it. I will not appease your gods. I will destroy them."
The whole scene looks terrifyingly impressive and is a true testament to what can be achieved with the revolutionary technology available with the Unreal Engine. The visual fidelity in this short clip certainly brings the character depicted to life and greatly increases player immersion. In a related tweet, Ninja Theory stated that they are "pushing the boundaries of real-time facial animation" with the upcoming sequel.
While fans will be eager to learn more about the upcoming game in the next few months, the trailer reassured the community that they're in for a treat when the game finally launches.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was released back in 2017 by Ninja Theory. The game's storyline was deeply rooted in a world drawn from Norse mythology and Celtic culture, where the titular heroine Senua waged war on her way to Helheim. The game is currently available on PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and was both a critical and commercial success upon launch.
Special praise was given for Senua's portrayal of psychosis and the many voices that played in her head throughout the game. Given the scope of the sequel, fans will be thrilled to see what ninja Theory has in store for them with Hellblade 2.
The six-minute trailer for Hellblade 2, which was shown at The Game Awards 2021, showed Senua leading a group of warriors in a familiar dark setting. As the trailer progressed, they made their way into the giant's hideous-looking lair and launched an attack on the beast. The trailer ends with the giant asking Senua for help.
