Propnight - How to play, Beginner's guide.

A summary of the main gameplay strategies for Propnight, based on the mid-October open beta.

Propnight Beginner's Guide

The purpose of this guide is to give you the opportunity to learn the basics using what little hands-on experience we had access to in the game. A lot will change, of course, so this guide will focus on the basics to make sure you're ready to get through the challenges as smoothly as possible, which can admittedly be a little rough to learn when under pressure.

Gameplay

In this game, 4 teenagers are trying to escape from 1 monster. You can choose between 5 children, and each has a limited use item, so your choice isn't just cosmetic (although they can get each other's items in chests). There are 3 monsters with completely different abilities and the same monster can be very easy or difficult to play as it depends a lot on the map. (fortunately the map is shown first)

The monster wins if all 4 are killed. Children win if the time is up and they are alive, or if someone escapes.

To kill a survivor, the monster must bring them to their knees and then pick them up (F on PC) and carry them to the nearest hypnosis (highlighted in red across the walls). If the survivor is not freed by another player before their time runs out, they will die.

Survivors may struggle to avoid the hands of the killer before the killer puts them in a chair. When released from a chair, a teenager will be devastated by at least 1/3 of his maximum life. The baby can also get up on his knees after a certain amount of time has passed and he can crawl slowly. Their teammates can help them too.

Survivors

Survivors can turn into props by selecting the one nearby to copy it. In this form, you can roll on the floor and jump, you can even crash into a monster to momentarily stun him and knock out a few coins to take them. The monster can also be stunned by slamming a door on them, which must also be destroyed.

Survivors need to find prop machines and repair 5 of them. (More than 5 in total) You just hold down the interaction button (F for PC) and sometimes the quicktime event will require you to press the button (spacebar for PC) while the marker on the sensor is on the highlighted segment. The end of this segment has a short marker, where the ending will give 100 coins instead of 75, and will help repair the car a little faster. If you fail the quicktime event, some progress will be lost and the monster will be warned!

When you repair cars or switch to floating coins, you will get points. With 1000 coins, you can get another item by opening the chest. You can open the same chest over and over again (you can pay the fee while doing so) and hold up to 3 items at a time. (Floating coins give 300)

Starting elements:

Jock: Energy drink to run faster for 9 seconds. Removed after 1 use.
Bookworm: Has a magic book to become invisible for a short time. Removed after 1 use.
Valley Girl #1/#2: First aid kit for healing 10 HP (out of your 100 max). Removed after 6 uses. Can be used on teammates as well.
Geek: Camera to stun the monster for 4 seconds. Removed after 1 use.

Note: One of the girls seemed to have an alternate outfit that some players are wearing, so this could indicate how the survivor/killer setup would work: not separate hats and clothes, but entire costumes.

The map is the first thing you learn when you start a session (unless you choose to join as a survivor or killer only). For a killer, the map is extremely important. The farm is a large open space, and if you're a dagger-wielding tuxedo monster, it might be difficult for you to actually hurt teenagers, even if you're close to them. A grandmother or a nun would be better for a farm. The house is an enclosed space where the tuxedo monster can use his tricks to turn into props (for a limited time) and even teens to be destructive here, while grandma's throwing knives are harder to aim accurately as teens there is plenty of room for escaping maneuvers. If you want to focus on one monster to be good on both stages, then a nun will be fine on either of them. The pastern's invisibility will also help her stay pretty effective anyway.

Abilities:

Nun: Can scratch with claws. Can scream to damage anyone (even in disguise) in close proximity. Can run fast.
Grandma: Wide stab. Leave the magic knife floating like a mine. Can become invisible for a short time.
Tuxedo Man: Can be stabbed with a dagger. Can imitate the survivor. Can transform into a prop in 30 seconds.

All monsters can place curses on prop machines. Curses cause the machine to sometimes break down while being repaired and warn you, and can also make quick hints more difficult and more frequent. You will need to wait a while before you can curse her again.
