Hello Games has announced a new update for No Man's Sky that will take players into space and add some gruesome content.

The No Man's Sky Desolation Update is a free patch that is now available to all players. Here is a summary of the new update along with a full list of changes and additions. Let's start.

No Man's Sky Desolation Update

The core of the No Man's Sky Desolation update revolves around the new derelict space cargo ships that will now appear in the galaxy. As players explore these freighters, they will uncover the horrifying story of what happened to each of the ship's crew. In addition, each cargo ship will be randomly generated, which means that the storylines will be different, as well as the enemies and dangers awaiting you on board. Those who can survive on the freighter will be able to grab some salvaged parts that they can use to upgrade their ship with new technologies. 

In addition to the new ship improvements, the No Man's Sky Desolation update now allows players to customize the colors of their ships through the update control terminal. In addition, the Desolation patch also made some changes to the combat system, aiming to make it faster and smoother. Finally, the Space Anomaly Nexus features a host of new multiplayer missions that allow players to explore exotic planets and help lost souls. You can catch the official trailer for the Desolation update in the video below.

In June, No Man's Sky arrived on Xbox Game Pass and, finally added cross-play, allowing players to team up with their friends on different platforms. This is a highly requested feature by the community, so it's great to see Hello Games taking the extra step to make this happen. Also, with the release of the Desolation update, it has been a good match for the community.

  • ♦Added a new space collision category, derelict freighter. They can be planted and explored.
    • ◊ Abandoned Freighters are procedurally generated with an infinite number of potential layouts.
    • ◊Abandoned Freighters contain large amounts of valuable salvage as well as special new rewards.
    • ◊Each star system has one Abandoned Cargo Style, allowing travelers to share system addresses on the portal with particularly interesting wrecks.
  • ♦ Abandoned cargo ships are home to several new hostile objects, including security towers, aggressive drones and a new kind of bio-terror.
  • ♦Abandoned freighters contain procedurally generated stories, with data logs to be found and the fate of the crew to be revealed.
  • ♦New lore and stories can be found by getting the Captain's Journal.
  • ♦Abandoned freighters are sometimes detected by spacecraft subspace radar when using Pulse Drive. However, they can be specifically found by purchasing an Emergency Broadcast Receiver from the new Space Station Waste Dealer.
  • ♦ Emergency broadcast receivers are expensive and can be scaled up according to demand. Prices reset every day.
  • ♦Iteration Helios offers a free emergency broadcast receiver every week.
  • ♦ Abandoned Freighters offer many lucrative rewards:
    • ◊Valuables and a large number of nanites.
    • ◊Ability to sell magazine data for nanites or while standing.
    • ◊Ability to use the engineering system of an abandoned cargo ship to extract a piece of cargo ship technology to fit into your own capital ship.
    • ◊The ability to use the engineering system of a derelict cargo ship to create new inventory slots for your capital ship. Apply the new expandable bulkheads to the upgrade station on your cargo bridge to apply them.
  • ♦The upgrade station on the cargo bridge can be used to repaint your cargo ship. Unlock new available colors with nanites. Unlocked colors are always available and can be reapplied for free.
  • ♦Storage containers based on the freighter now add tabs to the freighter's inventory page, allowing you to quickly manage its contents.
  • ♦Fixed a bug that prevented technology from being installed in the freighter's shared inventory.
  • ♦Improved the display and clarity of statistics displayed on the freighter's inventory screen.
  • ♦Teleports can now be built aboard cargo bases. These options do not require power. They can be used to teleport to other teleporters or to a space station.
  • ♦Capital ships now contribute statistics to the success of fleet expeditions. Different cargo ships have different base levels of fleet coordination. This stat can be improved with new procedural technologies salvaged from derelict or derelict freighters.
  • ♦ The Expedition UI now shows the difference between the stats provided by the fleet and the stats gained through temporary frigate upgrades or any capital ship technologies.
  • ♦Fixed an issue that could cause an expedition to start when adding or viewing available temporary frigate upgrades.

  • ♦In general, the player's weapon reload speed has been reduced and clip sizes have been increased.
  • ♦The base damage of the Boltcaster has been increased.
  • ♦ Ricochet is no longer included in the pool of procedural updates. Special technologies have been added to the research tree of the space anomaly, which, if desired, will add the functionality of a ricochet to a weapon.
  • ♦Boltcaster and Scatter Blaster now fire bursts. Holding fire will cause short gaps between salvos. They can be adjusted with new technologies.

  • ♦Fixed an issue that caused the secondary weapon mode to be canceled when loading a save.
  • ♦Added a new style for the exploration-focused Nexus multiplayer mission.
  • ♦Added a new Nexus multiplayer mission style to rescue stranded travelers.
  • ♦Reworked the Nexus multiplayer mission for excavations to allow progression from any type of bone, instead of requiring only very rare bones.
  • ♦Calling a cosmic anomaly while working with a pulse drive now correctly disables the pulse drive.
  • ♦Added a new item, Repair Kit. This can be used to repair any damaged subcomponent, instead of the required materials. The kit is consumed when used.
  • ♦Fixed a rare crash that could occur when using the shop in multiplayer.
  • ♦Introduced minor optimization for terrain generation.
  • ♦A new implementation of Bloom post-processing effects has been introduced.
  • ♦Improved lighting for bright and/or radiant props.
  • ♦Improved the quality and brightness levels of lens flare effects.
  • ♦Some spotlights, such as the player's flashlight, now use textured light patterns.
  • ♦ Selected spotlights now display volumetric properties.
  • ♦When you join a multiplayer game from the frontend, if the player you join is in the Space Anomaly, then you will spawn with them aboard the Anomaly.
  • ♦Fixed an issue that could cause text flickering on the Galaxy Map.
  • ♦Multiplayer player names are now displayed when hovering over systems on the Galaxy Map.
  • ♦Fixed an issue that could cause players to start the game on an unsafe system when starting a new game in multiplayer mode.
  • ♦Fixed a number of network stability issues.
  • ♦Fixed an issue that caused player marker names to conflict with their interaction tooltip.
  • ♦Fixed a number of cases of spam in chat messages when entering or exiting Space Anomaly.
  • ♦Fixed a number of issues that could cause missions to find incorrect targets when doing multiplayer missions with the Nexus.
  • ♦Fixed an issue that caused mission photos to not work correctly on Xbox.
  • ♦Fixed a bug that prevented players from summoning their ships to RGB systems.
  • ♦Fixed a number of issues that could occur if players removed the Void Egg before the first conversation with the Living Ship.
  • ♦Fixed a number of issues with resolution scaling, including the detection information popup, as well as damage and nearby Sentinel indicators.
  • ♦HUD now correctly shows the damage indicator when the jetpack breaks.
  • ♦Fixed an issue with VR camera positioning when the player's body is on.
  • ♦Added option for VR head bob when player body is on.
  • ♦Fixed a bug that caused VR weapon shadows to appear outside of VR.
  • ♦Fixed a bug that could cause the moon to be labeled as "unknown planet" even after being discovered.
  • ♦Fixed several incorrect or missing icons in the Guide.
  • ♦ The location of asteroids is now deterministic.
