Marvel's Avengers Delayed Four Months
Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has delayed its big new game Marvel's Avengers from May to September.
Previously scheduled for May 15, she will arrive on September 4.
This is a significant delay - it is completely different from Cyberpunk 2077 and much closer to the launch of this year's new consoles.
But it's not a huge surprise. Of all the major games announced last year, Marvel's Avengers had the most rough prep. Unveiled at E3 2019 to a decidedly mixed reception, the game garnered attention for its confusing sound of mixing single-player and online elements. There was also criticism of how the game looked and how the demo level provided on the show fell short of expectations.
However, some of that sentiment has changed in recent months. Identification of Khan, aka Ms. Marvel as the main character in the game last October paved the way for a new perspective on the game's story. Then, later this month, another trailer offered us the clearest explanation of how Marvel's Avengers would actually work.
Square Enix has a lot of feedback on what needs to be redone, and four months of extra time will certainly help.
In a statement released today on the Crystal Dynamics website, studio co-founders Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg apologized for the delay. Their words have been translated and presented below:
"For our fans,
“At Crystal Dynamics, we have always strived to provide the ultimate Avengers gaming experience. To achieve this goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel's Avengers to September 4, 2020.
“As fans themselves, it is a great honor and privilege to work with these legendary characters, and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring our vision of Marvel's Avengers to you, we made a commitment to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging collaboration and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend additional development time focusing on fine-tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.
“Teams around the world working on Marvel's Avengers truly appreciate the support you have given us. We appreciate your enthusiasm and feedback and we can't wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We're sure she's worth the wait."
