Kena: Bridge of Spirits - Developers Talked About Gameplay
Ember Lab tells us about their new PS5 game
It's the Rotters that grab most people's attention when they see Kena: Spirit Bridge in action on PS5 . These little sprite-like cute creatures, according to Mike Grier, developer of Ember Lab, are incredibly useful: “Rotten is the key to all aspects of the gameplay. They can be used in combat to expand your abilities. They can be used to manipulate the environment to carry things for you, and the more Rotten you have, the stronger you will become and the more opportunities you have to unlock,” he explains.
In the game, you play as Ken. “Kena, a young spiritual guide, travels to a godforsaken village in search of a sacred mountain altar. She is trying to find out the secrets of a lost settlement hidden in the thicket, where wandering spirits are imprisoned, ”explains Mike. “It becomes clear that there are larger forces at work in the game that have damaged the environment and prevented anything from moving forward.” And this is where you and the Rottenies come in, because Kena decides to help the spirits, but she can't do it alone.
“Ultimately you need to find out what happened to [the spirits] in their past lives,” explains Mike's brother and co-developer Josh Grier. “To do this, you look for clues in the environment while facing combat challenges and solving puzzles. But, ultimately, it depends on building and growing your Rotten team. You see them carrying statues around you and attacking enemies, but there really are a lot of uses for them and their abilities that you can upgrade. We're only giving you a taste, there are many more tricks up the sleeves of these little creatures."
This doesn't mean Kena can't take care of herself. “With the gameplay, we really wanted to show some of Kena's mobility,” notes Josh, “so that you can see her running and double jumping, which greatly increases the speed of combat.” Having a more capable lead character is necessary as, despite being witty, there are "darker elements of the game" that we haven't fully seen yet. The moments shown when Kena fights the spirits are just the beginning. “We wanted to use [the trailer] to set that darker tone,” says Mike, “as the player will be exposed to some of the darker themes in the storytelling.”
And if you're wondering when you'll be able to explore these dark themes as well as build your army of dark cuteness, Josh reassures us by saying, "We're aiming for a holiday release and it's coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and the Epic Games Store."
