After an epic adventure in the award-winning God of War reboot from 2018, it has been confirmed that game of the year will continue the incredible story.
With breathtaking level design and graphical prowess that set a new bar for the gaming industry, God of War has shaped expectations for what players can get from a game of this caliber.
How did God of War 2018 end?
Kratos had a lot of suffering in his life. Long ago, he fell prey to the deceit of the gods and killed his family. Then a fire flared up inside him, which combined anger, guilt and a thirst for revenge. The warrior embarked on the path of cruel bloodshed and did not calm down until he cut out the entire Olympus.
In God of War of 2018, it has changed. The path led him to frosty Scandinavia, where the god of war met his beloved woman, became a father and found peace. Alas, once the wife of Kratos died - the Spartan burned her body on a funeral fire in order to later dispel the ashes from the top of Jotunheim.
The journey to the top was not easy. The gods found out about the god of war and decided to challenge him - as a result, the Spartan had to fight hordes of enemies, free the Valkyries, find new friends and go through many troubles. Kratos's relationship with his son also developed: Atreus lost his head when he learned about his divine essence, became angry with his father and learned to accept him.
At the end of the game, Kratos killed the god Baldr and quarreled with his mother Freya, but still made it to the top of Jotunheim. There, the heroes learned that Fey was a giantess who became famous for her battles with Odin. And it also turned out that the real name of Atreus is Loki.
There were some sad news at the end. According to the prophecy, an early death awaits Kratos: on one of the frescoes, his lifeless body lies in the arms of a grown-up son.
God of War: Ragnarok release date
While no specific release date has been confirmed, developers at Santa Monica have stated that the sequel will arrive on PS5 in 2021. The studio could not keep its promise, and it will be possible to complete God of War: Ragnarok only in 2022. The game will be released November 9 2022 years!
Initially, the game was supposed to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but then plans changed - even PS4 owners will be able to appreciate the completion of Kratos' story.
God of War: Ragnarok trailers
There's incredibly little to say about the game right now, but any little bit of information blows the hell out of us all, just like the PS5 demo trailer did back in September 2020.
Teaser trailer
With a blue runic logo that seems to pretty much imply a continuation or cycle parallel to the infinity symbol, what could this teaser mystery hint at?
The ending title card just hints that "Ragnarok is coming" - and if the previous game is anything to go through, players are certainly in the mood for a whirlwind of compelling storytelling and intense combat moments.
Announcement Trailer
What is Ragnarok? Plot.
Balder was a madman who knew neither pain nor emotion since childhood. He was looking for a fight with Kratos to feel alive. Alas, everyone who gets in the way of the great Spartan inevitably dies - the son of Freya was no exception. But no one knew that the death of a god would be a harbinger of great troubles.
The omen says that after Balder's death, Fimbulwinter, the long winter, will come. It will end only after the end of the world, whose name is Ragnarok. It is in these difficult times that the events of the new God of War will unfold. At the same time, several years of winter are already behind us, which means the apocalypse will come soon.
Kratos has changed since God of War 3, when his actions led to the death of millions of mortals. Now he has become much calmer and more reasonable, and does not wish harm to ordinary people. Together with his son, he will try to prevent Ragnarok.
At the beginning of the game, the heroes will hide from the wrath of Freya, Thor and other gods, but in the end, Atreus will convince the god of war to play his part in the coming events. The son is hungry for answers and thinks that the war with the gods is what this world needs. Perhaps that was what Faye, his mother, wanted.
Atreus will get a solid role in Ragnarok. After all, according to legend, the end of the world will begin when the huge wolf Fenfir breaks the chains and swallows the Sun. After that, Midgard will plunge into chaos: earthquakes and hurricanes will plunge the area into chaos, the World Serpent Jormungandr will rise from the water and make a flood, and the giants will invade Asgard.
The fact is that in mythology the wolf Fenfir and the serpent Jormungandr are the children of Loki. They will be born as a result of the love of the god of deceit and one of the last giantess Angrboda. It is Angrboda that is shown at the end of the God of War Ragnarok trailer.
Atreus and Angrboda are yet to meet - so where did Jormungandr come from, who has been living in Midgard for a long time? Mimir answers this question: according to him, the great serpent came from the future - during Ragnarok, the dying tree Igdassil sent it to our time.
Is Atreus the same Loki who will challenge Odin himself? Will the heroes stop Ragnarok or, on the contrary, bring the end of the world closer? Unknown.
In any case, Kratos and Atreus will make the most important contribution to the story. They will be helped in this by both old friends Brock, Sindri and Mimir, as well as new acquaintances like giants, gnomes and the god of war Tyr.
Gameplay God of War: Ragnarok
Judging by the trailers, the gameplay of God of War: Ragnarok has remained true to the formula of the last part. Kratos and Atreus explore the world, solve mysteries, find new equipment and fight enemies.
It is known that the heroes will be able to visit all nine worlds. In the last part, it was possible to look into only five of them - while not all of them were thoroughly explored. For example, Muspelheim and Niflheim were dedicated to additional challenges.
In Ragnarok, the developers will expand the already familiar worlds and allow gamers to visit uncharted places like Vanaheim, Liesalfheim, Svartalfheim and, of course, Asgard. It is in the abode of Odin, most likely, that the final battle will unfold. Whether it will be possible to return to Helheim, which in mythology is not considered a full-fledged world, is unknown.
To make traveling around the worlds more convenient, the heroes will be able to use vehicles. They will be able to ride the boat from the first part and climb onto the team with the wolves.
And the exploration of locations will become more vertical. In trailers, Kratos often uses a chain that allows him to climb high platforms. In battle, the chain will also come in handy: it will allow you to fly into the hills where the archers stand and pull up to the enemies.
The combat system will also become more diverse, with new attacks and weapon-enhancing runes. In the trailer, Kratos wields an ax familiar from the first part and the famous Blades of Chaos. There is no news about the new weapon yet.
But the role of Atreus will definitely increase - the youngster has mastered many new tricks. Now he is able to attack enemies while riding a wolf or other animal and scatter enemies like bowling pins.
The abilities of the heroes will have to be combined - otherwise it will not be easy to defeat the villains. Some enemies are best eliminated by the powerful Kratos, others by the nimble Atreus. The opponents themselves will also become more diverse: huge lizards (drakes) and centaurs will definitely appear
The most dangerous rivals will be the gods. Already in the true ending of the last game, the heroes met Thor, who is at the "peak of male power." Then it did not come to a fight, but the collision of the Spartan with the god of thunder is inevitable.
In the video, Thor arrogantly addresses the Spartan: “You give the impression of a calm and reasonable person. Are you really like that?" Not so long ago, the god of war with his son killed his sons, so it is unlikely that the owner of Mjolnir came in peace. He will probably suggest that the characters surrender and accept death.
Another opponent will be Freya. In the last part, the goddess of love and fertility helped the heroes more than once, but after the death of her son Baldr, she became angry with them. She promised to take revenge on Kratos, and she will obviously try to keep her word.
In the trailer, she attacks the Spartan - the battle promises to be difficult. Yet the ex-wife of Odin is considered, among other things, the goddess of war. In addition, the woman returned the famous cloak with feathers - it allows Freya to turn into a falcon.
There is also no doubt that the heroes will face Odin. The cruel madman hates the giants who will act as allies of Kratos and Atreus, and he certainly does not favor the Spartan himself. The battle with the Allfather could be the climax of the plot of God of War: Ragnarok.
At the moment, this is all the information about God of War: Ragnarok, as of December 2021. Stay tuned here on PortalVirtualReality for all the latest news regarding this upcoming game.
