Zombie Mode Guide in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty

You won't be able to survive Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombie Mode for long without help. Here's everything you need to know

Zombie mode is an integral part of the Call of Duty series. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a Cold War action game set in the 80s. Fans of the regime will immediately recognize the central building from the very first zombie map, but after a few decades we visit this place again. Fan-favorite perks, an overhauled gameplay system, new gear mechanics, puzzles, and a range of characters to meet. Let's understand the basics of the regime.

Plot:

The Dark Aesther is a new dimension that was discovered at the end of the last map of the Black Ops 4 Zombie Mode. An ancient race of evil beings called the Apothicons reside here, and everything that enters the Dark Aether is corrupted.

At the end of Black Ops 4, all the heroes of the previous zombie storylines sacrificed themselves to plunge all of the many zombie universes into the Dark Aether, thus banishing the Apothecans and creating a new, special reality. According to Treyarch's blog post, they were half right.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the mode is called The machine. In the story, we're on the hunt for a powerful World War II technology known as the Projekt Endstation that threatens to start an arms race. Players fight for the international task force "Requiem", created by the CIA, led by Gregory Weaver. Opposing Requiem is the Soviet group Omega, an organization that seeks to use the Projekt Endstation.

One of Requiem's contacts is a woman named Sam, who is almost certainly Samantha Maxis. This means that the story of Dark Aether is a direct continuation. We know this because Samantha Maxis' lullaby plays when Sam enters the phone booth during the Die Maschine intro video. It has also been observed that the number she enters stands for Maxis.

Die Maschine Map:

The first map is called Die Maschine, but interestingly, it's clearly a reworked version of the very first zombie map, Nacht Der Untoten. Players spawn in bright daylight outside the bunker, fighting around the crash site in the forest before entering the bunker and exploring some of the underground levels.

Later, the map will change from daytime to a dark, alternate reality that should represent the dimension of the Dark Aether. Neon jellyfish soar in the sky, and plumes of glowing dust emanate from the surroundings.

Heroes:

Looks like we won't have a ferocious team of charismatic zombie exterminator warriors this time around. Instead, you'll play as Operators from Multiplayer and even some familiar characters from the Single Player Campaign, including Russell Adler, Lawrence Sims, and even Sgt. Frank Woods.

Zombie:

You will start the game with weak weapons and be able to kill a few zombies to collect points. You will then be able to access new areas and upgrades to your gear set. Each wave of zombies will increase in size, and the longer you survive the more damage you'll need to deal to defeat the undead, so upgrading your weapons and perks in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the only way to survive.

Cold War zombie gameplay builds on this classic formula, and many of the beloved perks and mechanics, such as the mystery box and the Pack-a-Punch machine, are making a comeback too.

Perks:

Elemental pop is a new perk in the Black Ops series that gives each bullet a small chance to activate a random base ammo modifier. Treyarch will be releasing more zombie-specific perks after launch. They will appear in perk machines as they always do in CoD zombie mode, but these machines have received a visual redesign. Don't worry, they will still have jingles for every perk.

What's interesting is that for the first time, perks will have an upgrade option that gives big benefits to some of the less popular ones. Upgrading your perks will require Raw Aetherium Crystals, a resource that can only be found by successfully exfiltrating or reaching new milestones in the game. You can also use an unlimited number of perks, and all perks can be upgraded three times.

Cross-Gen, Cross-Game and Cross-Progression:

Crossplay works in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War zombie mode. Players also have the added benefit that any weapon upgrades in multiplayer will reward you with the same gear in Zombie Mode. In addition to cross progression, you will also level up your battle pass and earn zombie rewards.

Equipment:

Characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will receive gear for the first time in the series. Instead of going into the woods with a pistol, you can now start with a full gear. However, this probably won't make your life much easier due to the new weapon rarity system. This means you'll need to upgrade to an upgraded version of your favorite firearm to keep up with the increasingly difficult waves of undead.

Equipment:

Gear in zombie mode is basically the same as in multiplayer, but you'll also be able to add some more exotic weapons to your kit as you progress through the map, including a grenade launcher and an explosive crossbow. Field upgrades have been changed to make them more effective against waves of enemies.

End of round:

At the end of the round, the final waves of zombies appeared, after passing which you can get additional rewards. The number of zombie spawns can go up to 11 for these final rounds, so be prepared.

Weapon rarity:

Weapon rarity is a way to make all weapons viable even in the late stages of a run. The weapon will have a number of rare versions, with increased damage and other characteristics of a rare weapon.

Mystery boxes:

The Mystery Boxes are back in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombie Mode, giving players powerful weapons to take down zombie hordes. You can find mystery boxes scattered throughout the map in seven locations:

  • Weapons Lab (Weapons Lab);
  • Medical bay (Medical Bay);
  • Courtyard (Yard);
  • Omega Outpost (Omega Outpost);
  • Particle Accelerator;
  • Pond (Pond);
  • Place of the accident (Crash Site).

It takes 950 zombie essence to open the Mystery Box. These boxes can contain weapons of any rarity. Pack-a-Punch also returns, this time with a new name: The Forge. Upgrade your weapons up to three times and apply ammo mods - you can do this on any of the Pack-a-Punch machines.
