Diablo fans are worried that Diablo 4 looks like a 'Diablo 3 clone'
A video showing 30 minutes of Diablo 4 gameplay has drawn backlash from the community for being very similar to the infamous Diablo 3.
For many Diablo fans, Diablo 3 was a real disappointment after the remarkable success of its predecessor, Diablo 2. Criticized for its overly linear storyline and lack of replayability, the third installment in the series didn't deliver what many players wanted.
In the next chapter of the story, Diablo 4, which promises massive changes to the war-torn realm of Sanctuary, fans of Blizzard's outrageously brilliant Dungeon Crawler sat and fidgeted in their chairs, waiting for any snippets of new information.
3 minutes of gameplay opened our eyes, but it was not the heavenly miracle that many players had hoped.
Diablo 4 Gameplay (Gameplay Video)
A lengthy 33-minute gameplay video of Diablo 4 has surfaced on YouTube. However, much to the annoyance of fans, there are a lot of similarities between the gameplay of the sequel and Diablo 3, the last but not the biggest installment in the franchise.
Passing TubeGameVideo for all four currently announced classes (barbarian, druid, rogue, sorceress) left players on the sidelines.
“I feel like I just watched some of my Diablo 3 footage,” writes one commenter, while another calls the gameplay “just an updated Diablo 3.” Some go so far as to caustically call it a "Diablo 3 clone".
Others have criticized Blizzard for losing sight of what made Diablo so great. Referring to the upcoming Diablo 2 remaster, one comment noted "when they need to remaster old games and not change anything, that speaks for itself". Another recalls: “What made Diablo 2 great was that you were always afraid.
However, it doesn't end there. In a Reddit thread discussing how spellcaster abilities would look in the game, some players denounced the lack of imagination when it comes to the look of various spells, claiming that they all looked like "lasers".
As we see more and more detail creeping out of the cracks, it will be interesting to see if Blizzard adapts this feedback to game design. Since there is no set release date yet, they have all the time to make changes, but whether they choose to or not is another story.
