Fishing became available in Destiny 2 in the Season of the Deep, and it's a great way to get some hefty rewards. In this fishing guide you will find useful information to successfully master this new activity.

Destiny 2: Season of the Deep is all about water, and one of its most notable additions is a very unexpected one: fishing. Yes, the long-running looter shooter is now home to a full-fledged fishing mini-game, and while you shouldn't expect anything that compares to the in-depth mechanics of a real fishing game, it's a fun diversion indeed. And there are some difficulty levels such as bait, focused fishing meter, and shifting the location of fishing ponds, which we will break down below.

How to unlock fishing in Destiny 2

Titan's corruption is spreading beyond the moon. Try to relax and enjoy fishing in search of samples of this filth throughout the solar system.

In order to gain access to fishing, you need to complete certain tasks in the Season of the Deep campaign. Complete the "Rescue" and "Dive" missions to progress in the game. After the first Dive, visit Hawthorne in the tower, where you will learn about fishing tackle and get a fishing rod. Go through the quest chain that will lead you to the fishing holes in various locations. After that, you will be able to fish on your own.

How does fishing work in Destiny 2?

The Fishing Ponds look almost like public events in three locations - Nessus, EDZ, and Throneworld - and you'll often see other players congregate at the makeshift docks that appear when these ponds are active.

To fish, you simply stand on the dock and hold the interaction button/key to cast the line into the water. When the fish finally grabs, you will see your bait go under the water and a message will appear. Click "Interact" again - ideally the moment the message pops up to ensure the "perfect catch". Even if you time it wrong, you can still fish your catch.

Be sure to pick up the fish you are catching - they will be lying on the ground around you and you will need to walk over them to collect them. Fish can be of different weights, with larger ones (18 kg and above) progressing in a certain Triumph, we will need a larger tank. Fishing in general will also contribute to the 1 week seasonal challenge"The one who didn't leave».

Where are the fishing ponds in Destiny 2?

Pond in Destiny 2

Fishing ponds are perhaps the most confusing aspect of fishing when you are just starting out as the ponds are not always accessible and they are not always in the same places. There are three directions with fishing ponds: the Cistern on Nessus, the Outskirts on Eze, and the Miasma on the Throneworld. But they function as social events where fishing ponds periodically spawn and then disappear after a while (although no timer is displayed).

Even though the map has a marker for each destination, it won't lead you to the exact location of the fishing pond, assuming it's currently available. Instead, you will need to explore the area to find it:

  • On the EDZ, somewhere along the south coast of the Outskirts
  • On Nessus, in the radiolarian fluid in the Cistern, east of the Well of Flame
  • In the Throneworld, on the north coast of Miasma

Luckily, there is a relatively easy way to spot these fishing ponds: look for a beam of light projecting into the sky. You should be able to see it from a decent distance, signaling the presence of a fishing pond on the ground below it.

How does the bait work?

Although you can fish without bait, bait is required in order to be eligible to fish with a higher rarity (effectively preventing endless grind). The bait will automatically be used when catching fish if you have it on hand. You can check how much you have by looking at the pop-up message on the screen before casting the lure, or by hovering over the "Fishing Tackle" item in your inventory.

You can hold a maximum of 500 lures at a time. Lure can be obtained by completing the aforementioned quests - such as the new Rescue and Dive modes, as well as Patrols, Public Events and Playlists such as Crucible and Gambit - or by collecting Assignment Materials.

How does Focused Fishing work?

The exact details of Focused Fishing remain unclear at the moment, but building this counter will increase your chance of catching fish of a rarer rarity. The Focused Fish indicator can be seen on the left side of the screen when next to a pond.

When catching legendary or exotic fish, this meter will increase. All catches of nearby players will contribute to your counter, even if they are not on your fireteam. This means that ideally you want to fish in a pond with a few other players, and you'll want to do it for as long as possible, as the counter will reset when the pond disappears, even if you don't leave your destination and wait for another pond to appear.

Achieving each of the increments will increase your chances of getting a rarer fish, and you'll see messages like "A nearby fish started to take notice" to signify your progress.

Fishing Rewards in Destiny 2

As with the amount of bait you are carrying, you can check how many fish you have collected and their rarity by hovering over the fishing tackle in your inventory. You can carry a maximum of 500 fish at a time.

At any time, you can head to the nearly open wing of HELM to release your fish into the tank, which is done with a fun Gambit-dunk flourish. This way, you are rewarded for your time spent fishing, as keeping the fish will give you shimmer, sonar reputation, and, in the case of legendary or exotic fish, real weapons and items, including the new legendary sword "Just in Case."

The fish you set aside will appear in the aquarium along with various other themed items from the game's past. There are plenty of fishing related triumphs, and some unlock extra decorations for your tank.
