How to beat the Zhang Rang boss in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Use Magic Spells and Martial Arts!
- At the beginning of the fight, Zhang Rang appears with 9 clones of himself, each of which gives him a unique buff. These buffs include no/damage reduction from certain elements, Spirit Gauge expansion, health regen increase, etc. To deal significant damage to him, all of his clones must be defeated before attacking him.
- His clones don't do too much damage. Focus on dodging and countering Zhang Rang's original attacks.
- At about half health, he restores all 9 clones and restores all buffs. In addition, he gains access to two new moves.
- It invokes lightning spells, so it is recommended to increase Wood's resistance.
Strategy Guide
Zhang Rang is a boss that can quickly get out of hand if you're not careful. He doesn't pose much of a threat on his own, but the problem with Rank is that he constantly summons multiple clones of himself, all of which are capable of attacking/casting spells on you on their own.
Once you get control, you'll want to run ahead and start hacking clones. You can tell the clones from the real Zhang Rang by the health bar. If it is visible from a distance while locked, it is a clone. The reason to focus on clones rather than the real Zhang Rang is that they are relatively easy to defeat, requiring only a few hits before becoming vulnerable to a fatal blow. Additionally, for each clone that is defeated, the upper and lower bounds of the Rank Spirit Gauge become smaller, meaning that it will itself be incredibly vulnerable to Fatal Blow if you defeat each clone before turning your attention to it. Also, the more clones you defeat, the easier it will be for the remaining clones to stagger and be open to Fatal Blow.
His clones come in several forms; those that focus on melee combat, and those that focus on spells. Spell clones will keep their distance, most often on the outskirts of the arena, and will summon various forms of lightning: balls, lightning bolts, and straight lines of electricity that travel across the arena.
These can all be deflected, and towards the start of the fight, when most/all of the clones are still alive, you will essentially have to spam the reject button non-stop to avoid getting stunned and/or taking lethal damage. Even if you dodge and dodge all over the place as a result, this is an undeniably effective method. Those who focus on close combat can perform basic swipes with their swords or throw jabs that act as critical hits.
They can be hard to avoid most of the time due to the fact that they come from behind the screen, but if you use the dodge/dodge method all the time then you will more often than not avoid/reject any of their attempts.
One of the key tips is to focus on eliminating one clone at a time. Use blocking to track one and use Fatal Strike when it becomes available. Not only does this remove one threat from the field, but the I-frames during the Fatal Strike animation can be vital in helping you avoid a series of incoming attacks/spells from the remaining clones.
Rinse and repeat, deviating as often as possible and slowly reducing the number of clones until none remain. You will know how much (if any) is left by the blue squares in the bottom left corner of Zhang Rang's health bar. If there are none, there are no clones left. The clones can and will teleport from time to time, but your blockage will remain, so just stay in close proximity, sprint to close the distance if they momentarily leave.
Once only the real Zhang Rang is left, you will need to keep up the pressure. Lock in with it and recharge. He will also teleport and can additionally summon tornado-like storms around him that periodically discharge electric shocks. They can be rejected, but can also be easily discarded until the animation ends.
Zhang Rang can also launch into the air by sliding around before spinning very fast and slicing through his sword. It's not a critical hit attack, so it can be hard to time the deflection, but the attack doesn't deal much damage even if it connects, so after a couple of tries, you should be able to properly hit it as it spins down towards you.
Due to the elimination of the clones, his Spirit Gauge will still be severely limited, allowing you to stagger quickly if you're aggressive enough, often opening it up for Deathblows. After a couple of hits, it will turn back on and resume its clones.
It just requires you to repeat the same process suggested so far, re-targeting the clones until Rang is alone again and degrading his health.
At around 50%, Zhang can occasionally summon one clone for a brief moment to perform a direct strike or a burst of electric balls fired forward. These attacks are relatively easy to deflect or even take the brunt of the damage, so just keep Zhang Rang's heat on and the fight should be over relatively quickly.

Lor
Zhang Rank, originally from the Yingchuan Commandery, is one of the chief eunuchs serving under the emperor.
Visiting the court from a young age and enjoying the favor of the emperor, he gradually rose to power. Along with other respected eunuchs, he was part of a clique of unsurpassed authority known as the Ten Eunuchs. Dissatisfied with this state of affairs, Commander-in-Chief He Lin was consulted by Yuan Shao to remove them from power, but Zhang Rank preemptively killed him. Hungry for material wealth and consumed by greed, he appointed prominent officers, such as provincial inspectors, or sold the Elixir to anyone in his favour. Under his presence, the imperial court became almost corrupt.
Despite being a servant of the Court himself, he ordered the construction of a massive dungeon under Luoyang, where he would imprison innocents and extract their Qi, the Elixir ingredient, from them. He was secretly associated with the Yellow Turban rebels and made a huge fortune from the illegal arms and elixir trade. After the end of the uprising Zhang Rank brought to justice for his actions by Cao Cao and the protagonist, he abruptly split into dozens of phantom doubles before attacking them. It was then revealed that he had already turned into an inhuman entity with the help of the Elixir. After being defeated by the protagonist, he fled, still fixated on using his Elixir, but was ruthlessly cut down by Dong Zhuo.
