Choosing the Right Tool

In Nier Replicant ver1.2247... enemies and weapons are varied and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Different enemies are vulnerable to different weapon classes and status effects.

Weapons come in three classes: one-handed, two-handed, and polearm. Different weapon classes have different stat ratios, respectively.

  • Attack: The base damage of the weapon's standard attacks.
  • Magic Power: Percentage of damage is increased when using Sealed Verses while wielding a weapon.
  • Weight: Directly determines the main character's attack speed when using a weapon.

Each of the above attributes vary in effectiveness against different enemies, which play an even more important role in boss fights.

In the first part of the game, the main character will only have access to a one-handed sword. As the story progresses, two-handed swords and spears will be introduced in the second part. Consequently, the choice of weapons is also limited by the availability corresponding to the timeline of the story.

Combos and auras

Automatically attacking enemies in melee with weapons is apparently the most basic form of combat in Nier ver1.2247…. However, unbeknownst to many players, the weapon can also perform combos - special attacks produced by specific sequences of controls. Although the controls for combos are the same for different weapon classes, their special attacks produce different effects.

The main combos include (but are not limited to): ground special attack, air attack/jump attack, dodge attack, counterattack (guard) and charge attack.

Another attribute of the weapon is its aura - its element when performing an offensive attack. Each weapon can belong to one of five auras: Fire, Lightning, Holy, Dark and Earth. While all spears generate lightning auras, individual One-Handed Swords and Two-Handed Swords belong to different auras.

One-Handed Weapon - Nier Replicant

This is the fastest type of weapon, a 5-hit combo that hits in a wide area in front. However, it deals the least damage and, due to its low weight, has the least power behind it. The Ground Special Attack is a quick strike that deals no damage, but causes guarding enemies to retreat backwards, leaving them open to attacks. When used in the air, the special attack allows Niru to force his sword into the ground below him, damaging anything near the strike. This attack is also known as "Skull Crusher". If Nier attacks from level, he will perform a horizontal strike

Two-Handed Weapons - Nier Replicant

Two-handed swords deal the most damage of all weapons. They hit everything around Nier in a wide area, but are also the slowest due to their sheer weight. Nier can barely swing this giant weapon while struggling to keep it moving, resulting in a slow, heavy hitting, 3-hit combo that is very effective against groups of enemies. Due to the sheer power behind each of these attacks, they easily break the defenses of blocking enemies. This class's special attack is a spinning attack that deals 2 hits to nearby enemies. The Air Special Attack also performs the Skull Crusher function, but with much more power. When used after dodging, Nier makes a slow, upward swing.

Spears - Nier Replicant

Spears are in the middle between the other two weapon types in terms of speed and damage. They deal more damage than one-handed swords at the cost of speed, but deal less damage than two-handed weapons. Their basic combo consists of three long range attacks but very little width to the left or right. It's also impossible to change the direction of an attack in the middle of a combo, making it difficult to deal with groups of enemies. Both special effects result in a very useful quick attack that has a huge range and goes through enemies. After dodging, the spears swing horizontally, their only means of hitting an area outside of their special attack. Since the charged attack covers a large area, Nier can use it in combination with forward dodges to move much faster than running (Special Attack -> Dodge -> Dodge -> Special Attack...).
