Underworld Ascendant is an RPG that is the spiritual successor to the cult Ultima Underworld series. Production is being developed by OtherSide Entertainment under the direction of Paul Neurath, co-creator of the series Ultima, and then the head of Looking Glass Technologies (the author of such hits as System Shock or Thief: The Dark Project).
The described project was created, among other things, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter website. The Underworld Ascendant section takes us on a journey through a fantastic underground land called the Stygian Abyss. This place is inhabited by three intelligent races: gnomes, dark elves and charlatans, which are humanoid fish.
Separate factions are at war for influence, and, worse, the inhabitants of the underworld are threatened by the threat of the undead. The player hits the very center of this crucible; the decisions he made in the course of the struggle will leave an imprint on the fate of the country.
Mechanics Events in which we participate are shown in the first person ( FPP ). During the game, we can play the role of a magician, a warrior or a robber; However, the character development system developed by the developers allows the free choice of various skills related to combat, stealth and magic. In addition, as the fight progresses, we increase the combat potential of our hero, supplying him with more and more powerful weapons, magic items and other useful equipment. The game world consists of underground cities and settlements, ancient temples, or vast labyrinth-like cave systems.
Traveling through the Stygian Abyss, we perform various tasks on behalf of its inhabitants; among them there are both simple missions and complex intrigues. Individual quests can be completed in a variety of ways - insight in the production of rewards, creative use of the opportunities offered by the environment, and improvisation. For example, a trap standing in our way can be neutralized by immobilizing it with sticky fruits, an obstacle in the form of a wooden door can be neutralized by fire, and a remote switch can be activated by throwing one of the objects found at it. The same applies to confrontation with opponents that we fight in real time, using a wide arsenal of melee weapons (swords, daggers), ranged weapons (bows), as well as offensive and defensive spells. Often, however, a better idea than a duel is to sneak into the shadows (helped by the presence of arrows with water, with which, as in the aforementioned Thief, we extinguish torches) or to lure the enemy into a previously set set. traps.
Underworld Ascendant uses Unity technology, the possibilities of which were duly used by the authors. The three-dimensional graphics of this production are designed in a certain style, the locations are diverse, and the enemy models are enriched with a large number of details; All this is complemented by the fact that the game uses the laws of physics - for example, each item has its own weight, so we will not throw a wooden box as far as, for example, a clay vase.
