'El Risitas' Died From Viral Spanish Laughing Man Meme
Spanish actor and comedian Juan Joya Borja, also known as "El Ricitas" and the face of the famous "Laughing Spanish Guy" meme, has died at the age of 65 due to an illness.
With the "laugher" in social networks, people say goodbye to whom he gave positive emotions with his infectious laughter.
On the death of Juan Joya Borja reported ABC de Sevilla edition. He died in the Hospital of Our Lady of El Rocío, where he was transferred due to a relapse of a disease of the cardiovascular system. On April 5, the Spaniard turned 65 years old. The information was confirmed by Santiago Segura, a Spanish actor and friend of Borja.
Juan Borja himself was a fairly well-known actor and comedian in Spain. But most of all, the world and the Internet remember him as "El Risitas" (El Risitas), the "gull" of memes and video parodies. The basis of the joke was a real interview of the Spaniard, which he gave to the host Jesús Quintero on the local channel Canal Sur.
During the conversation, Borja recalled his youth and laughingly spoke about his work in a coastal restaurant in the city of Chipiona: he was appointed a dishwasher and given the first task - it was necessary to wash the dried pans. A colleague advised the newcomer to leave them on the seashore to be cleaned of dirt with sand and water.
Borja, nicknamed Risitas at work, left the dishes on the shore and went to sleep. And the next morning he discovered that the tide had risen at night and carried everything into the sea. So the future actor lost all the frying pans. The original video of the interview appeared on YouTube in 2007.
Eight years later, it became the subject of many parodies, including in Runet. The Laughing Spaniard talked about Apple presentations, politicians' speeches, sports matches and everyday stories. The whole meaning was conveyed in subtitles - the video remained unchanged.
Borja became famous in the Russian-speaking part of the Internet, and in the English-speaking, and, of course, in his homeland. In hundreds of videos, he laughed at a variety of things. In the West, he also became famous thanks to the reaction picture of KEKW, a popular emote on Twitch, based on a frame from Huang's interview.
In subsequent years, El Ritisas continued to appear in memes, but in reality he had problems. Borch developed a cardiovascular disease and also suffered from an infection. In the fall of 2020, his leg was amputated. Upon learning of this, social media users collected 14 euros for him to pay off debts for medical services.
In March 2021, El Ricitas thanked people for their donations by filming a video. He spent all this time in a hospital in his native Seville: he was transferred to the hospital of the Virgin of El Rocío on the eve of his death. The fact that Borja had serious health problems (recovery after surgery was also complicated by diabetes), the Spanish media wrote back in the winter.
Social media users said goodbye to a man who gave them positive emotions with his laughter.
