Binds, key bindings
Unlike many other MMOs, the number of keys that need to be bound for the New World is much more limited. You will only need to use three skills at any given time compared to dozens in many other games. This gives you a lot of patience with how you set up your key bindings.
Keybindings are mostly a personal preference, but there are a few useful options that aren't bound by default. We'll also talk about some minor optimizations you can make to keep everything centralized. The most important thing in general is that you can get to everything you need very conveniently. In order not to cause discomfort when playing for any reason.
Movement Cluster
This is usually WASD (or the equivalent in your area if you are using AZERTY or another set of keys). Since you're not trying to use dozens of abilities in New World, the default WASD is fine. However, you can move this so that more key bindings are centered around the movement keys for easier access to important bindings.
Change active weapon
This one is unbound by default and makes it much easier to switch between your weapons. I've personally been comfortable with being bound to C or V, but it's often best to click the mouse when possible.
fast pings
They are also unrelated by default, but can also be very useful. The ping wheel works, but there are a few pings that are useful to quickly determine, especially for Wars and certain roles.
We highly recommend linking "Help Needed", "Healing Needed", "Protect Here" and "Fix Here". That's all to communicate quickly in stressful situations and if you don't use voice chat or can't; this is your best option.
Предпочтения
All of these options are actually preferences, except for one.
Bandwidth mode
This setting allows you to configure New World's bandwidth usage. If you have a slower or more limited connection, this can help reduce your overall bandwidth usage.
If you can, it is recommended to set it to "High" while playing the game. This alone can boost your productivity if you're not worried about data caps or a similar issue from your ISP.
Language filter
This setting filters out swear words and other words that should be avoided in text chat.
This is optional but recommended if you are streaming on any platform or recording for YT. You have no control over what other people will say, and sometimes these platforms have issues with chat. I personally have it disabled, but that's primarily because I don't create live content at the moment, otherwise I wouldn't take the risk.
Subtitles
Includes subtitles for dialogue (particularly cutscenes from what I've noticed)
They only apply to cutscenes, but are very useful to include in the opening cutscenes, as well as everything that happens throughout the story. It offers convenient accessibility for those who may have hearing problems. I personally recommend wearing them so that any accents do not interfere with your understanding
Enable achievement notification
This option will display a popup notification when you are close to completing or have already completed an achievement.
I personally tend to turn this off as it may now be fixed, but if the achievements break, as they did in the beta, this can pop up frequently. If you're an achievement hunter or just a more casual player, you might want to consider doing this. I just found that it's a bit early in the game when you gain achievements quickly.
Enable Google Analytics Reporting
Uses a small amount of bandwidth to help AGS monitor and resolve potential in-game issues.
The recommended setting for this setting is Off if you care about avoiding any latency (ping) fluctuations. They will still be small bumps when active, so as long as your ping doesn't go up too much, there's nothing wrong with leaving it on.
Gameplay
I will just outline some of them. Most of these are personal preference, but there are a few that are important to play with.
invert camera
This inverts the vertical axis (y-axis), changing direction up and down.
If you're used to using this setting, be sure to do so. However, it may benefit those who play with controllers more often as it is more convenient. Personally, I don't use it.
Camera sensitivity
This affects how fast you can turn or adjust the camera, which is important for combat.
If you are playing with a ranged weapon, it will be even more important to set it up correctly. You need to be able to turn quickly and accurately, so finding a balance between the two is the key to tuning this setting.
Enable camera shake
Allows the camera to shake for certain actions.
Even though it reduces the impact of some moves and attacks, I turn it off. If you're playing a ranged magic weapon fighter, you should disable this as it will negatively impact your ability to aim, especially in expeditions and other content that may include explosions or large creatures.
Always show grid
Allows you to always see your reticle, even when your weapon is not drawn.
This is useful for all players, regardless of weapon, but very useful for ranged weapons. They will be able to aim more accurately even before they draw their weapons.
Hotkey hint for social actions
Displays your social hotkey when within range to interact with another player.
I honestly turn it off, but mostly I prefer it. It's easier for me to just remember a hotkey than to make it float over someone. This can get in the way if you want to get a closer look at someone's armor/cosmetics.
HUD - Show Life Values
Displays your health, mana and stamina on their respective bars.
Always turn it on. This gives you a better idea of how much damage you are taking and how soon you can dodge or cast another spell.
HUD - context fade
Hides combat items when not in combat for an extended period of time.
Personally, I always turn it off. There are better options for taking clear screenshots and videos for a variety of reasons. The disappearance of these elements can also cause you to forget which weapon is your active weapon when both are sheathed.
HUD - Always show weapons
This option always shows both the weapon and its ability cooldown.
PvE or PvP, this option should always be enabled. The amount of information it gives you is very important. Knowing when your cooldowns will be ready again will help you change your skills much more often and help reduce build damage.
Show the cooldown of additional abilities
This option adds an additional cooldown display closer to your health bar.
This is optional and helps in PvP, but not essential for PvE. The only benefit it gives is a more accurate cooldown down to 0,1 seconds rather than showing the entire second on the weapon display.
Floating damage numbers
This determines whether numbers will be displayed next to the hit target or their health bar.
Personally, I prefer this to be enabled, especially for ranged weapons. The damage-to-health bar link can often obscure the target you're trying to hit, limiting visibility. When enabled, the numbers are shifted to the side where they are less intrusive.
Accept invitations to duel
Allows people to invite you to duels.
In general, there is nothing wrong with this. However, in the past it was possible to use it and troll people. It's usually safer to take this off unless you're specifically going to duel.
Auto transition
This option enables auto lift and auto storage while running.
This should always be enabled. This helps a lot when only solid walls prevent you from moving forward with auto run if you need to take a step forward for a moment but still want to move towards your destination.
Targeted Healing
This allows you to lock your healing abilities on allies, making it easier to use most healing skills.
This option must always be enabled. Without this option, it is incredibly difficult to correctly use the large single-target healing capabilities on the Life Staff.
Targeted Healing - Camera
There are two options here: Freeform Camera and Camera Retargeting. The Freeform Camera prevents you from blocking your view of the target, allowing you to look and aim freely, while still keeping your spells blocked. Aim retargeting allows you to adjust the target of the capture using aiming.
Free form chamber is MANDATORY. You absolutely don't want your camera to lock onto your healing target, especially in PvP, as it can and will interfere with your movement. Retargeting is only available when the freeform camera is off and should always be disabled.
Targeted Heal - Target Block
Again, there are two options here: sticky blocking and manual blocking. Sticky Lock lets you lock after healing, while manual lets you lock before.
Sticky Lock should be off unless you are applying multiple heals to the same target or a stationary area like Sacred Ground and one targeted heal. Otherwise, blocking after healing will only cause movement problems.
Manual lock is better and more convenient whether you use it or not. It allows you to preemptively lock on to the target before healing. Although, as a rule, switching targets with the mouse wheel is much easier and smoother.
Targeted Healing - Group Mode
Group mode allows you to lock only the targets in your group.
This can be useful in coordinated PvP groups that consist of multiple squads, each with their own healer. However, this can be detrimental in Wars or if you are using mostly non-targeted abilities.
Quests with automatic pinning
There are settings for each type of quest, telling the game to automatically pin them when you accept them.
Main quests should always be automatically pinned and should remain enabled. Side quests usually lock well automatically, they can be pinned manually as they often don't play well with the main quests.
Faction Missions, City Projects and Recipes do not need to be pinned automatically. They should only be pinned if you solve them along with the main or side quest.
Visual effects
These are all graphics related settings and I will share my preferences, but you can tweak them up or down depending on your PC. As a guide to what my settings are based on, here is a quick overview of my current specs. My computer uses an i7-8720X and a GTX 1080 4GB with 16GB of RAM and I play at 1080p.
windowed mode
In this case, the game will run in windowed, full-screen or borderless full-screen mode.
Fullscreen and borderless fullscreen are generally preferred unless you're playing at very high resolutions. I personally use fullscreen as it gives the best overall performance.
Resolution
It should either be your own resolution or something with a similar aspect ratio to prevent stretching or any letterbox shape. This should be your own default resolution.
Brightness contrast
Brightness and contrast work together to help balance colors, values that are too high or too low can affect the overall look of your game.
I personally leave both around 50, which seems to hold up pretty well, but this can vary from monitor to monitor.
line of sight
This affects both the vertical and horizontal range you can see around your character.
Personally, I max this out to 70, but it can be a little detrimental for ranged players trying to fire from range. The higher this value, the smaller the overall zoom you will get in zoom mode.
Video quality
This will set all options below it to the same value: low, medium, high, or very high. If you manually change any setting, it will display "Custom" instead.
Effect details
This setting changes the appearance of attacks from you, other players, and monsters in the game.
I personally set this to Very High as it makes them a lot nicer overall and makes it harder to miss when a certain attack is about to be used.
lighting details
This affects the lighting effects in the game.
Setting this higher value can affect how easy it is to see abilities and some abilities glow. I personally set it to medium, except for screenshots in picturesque locations.
Object details
I didn't understand exactly what objects it affects. However, this does not affect performance too much.
I leave this setting at "High" as it has minimal impact on performance in testing.
Post-Processing Details
This minimally affects the overall look of the game, but can have a big impact on FPS.
Personally, I have it set to Very High, although this should be one of the first settings you lower if you're still having FPS issues.
Shadow details
This affects the accuracy of the shadows in the game. The higher this parameter, the less blurred and more accurate they are.
I personally set it to medium as it's a good balance between having shadows and how much they affect performance. Setting this value to low can greatly improve FPS in the city.
Terrain details
This mainly affects the level of detail of the ground. It has minimal impact unless set to High or Very High, where it can drop FPS a bit.
I personally leave this setting at "High". This is a very minimal impact overall and prevents low resolution ground textures from appearing, improving the overall look of most areas and trails.
texture details
This affects the textures of almost every part of the game. This can be very burdensome for past environments and should be one of the first settings you change with post-processing.
It seems to me that High offers the best balance between visual quality and performance.
Water details
This affects the quality of the water effects. It doesn't affect performance too much in most areas.
Since you spend a lot of time in and around Windsworth, I recommend setting this setting to Medium. This is because there is a river that runs through the city and around a lot of quest areas, so it can improve performance in those areas.
Show FPS
It should be renamed to "Show Performance Statistics" as it displays detailed performance information in the top left and top right corners. It also displays a main clock on the top left which shows your current time in 24 hour format.
This does not affect performance, but turning it on while configuring settings can help you determine how each one affects you personally. Personally, I have it because it helps me understand when there is a slight delay.
V-Sync
This can help stabilize your visuals if your FPS is higher or lower than your monitor.
I recommend enabling this setting as it can stabilize the frame rate.
Max FPS
This sets a framerate limit, which can help reduce the load on menus and the like for higher end systems. It has options of 30, 60 and unlimited.
I personally set this to no limit since my monitor runs above 60 fps. It's really a settings preference.
FPS limit in the background
This reduces CPU and graphics usage when the game is minimized or out of focus.
I recommend enabling this, although you may get a slight initial stutter when you bring it back into focus. I personally leave it out to avoid it.
Maximum visible nameplates
This greatly affects your performance in cities and wars. It limits the number of player nameplates that can be seen at the same time, showing only the closest one.
I recommend setting this value to 10 or less for urban performance. Cities are getting quite crowded and this may require you to increase your FPS.
Dynamic resolution scaling
This will adjust your resolution to maintain the highest frame rate possible with your settings.
This is a preference option. This can affect each system differently, I can recommend trying it out to see if it helps with frame rate issues. Personally, I have it turned off.
Other settings
It remains to talk about a couple of settings from Communication, Social and Twitch. So let's talk about them very quickly.
Communication - voice chat mode
This option allows you to customize your preferences for voice communications in the open world. You can switch between Always On, Group Only and Off.
Personally, I have this setting set only to the group. Although you can do all sorts of interesting things with it, like some musicians who started roleplaying as bards. There are too many who can and will try to make this a terrible experience.
Social Media - Hide Social Banner Notifications
This setting will hide incoming sales notifications from deals, trade offers, and group and corporate invitations.
This is a personal preference, as people often spam people into companies. It also hides banners when people invite you to groups, which can be painful.
