Manga Genre Horror: Top Scariest Manga You Need to Read

Horror manga skillfully combines the reading of a scary novel with incredible yet terrifying works of art. When it comes to storytelling, it's often a unique experience, so it's no surprise that horror in manga has so many dedicated followers.

There are so many different types of the best horror manga out there that it would be almost impossible to recommend them all.

However, we have selected a list of 10 scary stories that we think are enough to hook any reader for a lifetime. The entries below are in no particular order.

Shelter

Hideout begins with the story of a disgruntled husband named Seiichi who plans to kill his wife while they go on a journey together. The manga doesn't reveal his motivation until the end of the story, so it's hard to know who to root for from the start.

Seiichi botches the assassination attempt, revealing his plan to his shocked wife, who flees into a cave to escape him. However, the cave is not a sanctuary. It soon becomes clear that Seiichi and his wife are not alone - there is something much worse inside.

What really sets Hideout apart from the fantastic cat and mouse story is its art. No matter how dark the story gets, it always remains a visual treat.

I am a hero

This horror manga by Kengo Nanazawa is for fans of the zombie apocalypse. However, he also manages to deal with important topics such as mental illness. The protagonist, Hideo, is already suffering from problems even before the world has turned into a nightmare of the undead. It's nice to follow a character like this rather than the typical gun-to-hand stereotypes.

I Am a Hero also features some eye-catching designs thanks to the cool zombie design. Here the undead are often distorted in bizarre ways to add extra terror to the body. They can also fuse with each other, transforming into huge twisted masses of predatory flesh.

haunting woman

Zashiki Onna (The Stalking Woman) is a classic horror manga that has been captivating readers since the 1990s. The story follows Hiroshi who one day meets a very tall and intimidating woman who, for some sinister reason, is trying to find her next door neighbor. However, she soon starts stalking Hiroshi instead.

We'll leave it up to you to find out what's really going on by reading it for yourself. But it's Zashiki Onna's art style and believability that really help him stand out. This is a truly terrible manga that does not stand up to scrutiny.

Underside (Initsu)

We're including Initsu because it has the same horror beats as Zashiki Onna, in that the plot is a pure stealth factor. The story begins with the main character Kazuki leaving the house to empty his urns, only to find a young girl sitting next to him. The girl asks him if he has a younger sister and soon begins invading his life in a terrifying way.

This story is scary because it starts with Kazuki just going about his daily chores and then descends into madness and horror. Plus, it gets incredibly horrific in parts, but how can you take your eyes off something as talented as Ryo Haruto has drawn?

Attack of the Titans

Hajime Isayama's masterpiece has become one of the most popular horror manga of all time. Some even refer to it as the "Japanese Walking Dead", although others think the title is simplistic and we can see why.

Attack on Titan tells the story of Eren Yeager, a young man with severe anger issues who grows up in a post-apocalyptic walled city. The city is surrounded by a wall because the outside world is inhabited by 16 foot tall humanoid giants known as titans.

These creatures eat people and do it joyfully, ignoring the painful death they inflict on their victims. Throughout the story, you understand why Eren is so angry when everyone else in this universe is usually scared.

Gosik

Gosik is a manga that follows two alternate children obsessed with gruesome murders. Though what makes Gosick compelling is that despite the creepy things they do, the relationship between the two main characters is actually pretty sweet.

This is actually a story about loneliness and how the desire to find friendship can sometimes take a dark turn. This may be a story that many readers can understand, depending on their own experiences in high school. Everyone felt like they didn't fit in at some point, and Gosik really is an exploration of those feelings and where they can lead.

The girl who sees it

The girl who sees this or Izumi Tomoki's "Mieruko-chan" isn't as well known as many on this list, but she's scary because she manages to evoke the same feelings in readers as M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense.

The story is about a girl named Miko who can see dead people. Miko, however, dislikes this ability and does her best to keep the ghosts out. This is because she does not want the ghosts to know that she has this power, and in case they do, they will hurt her.

The manga is essentially a Miko who lives her life avoiding creatively drawn ghosts. Their design is a terrifying feast for the eyes, and the manga's plot gets more and more exciting as the pages turn.

Post Neurotic Radio (Kouishou Rajio)

We included Post-Neurotic Radio on this list because we think horror anthology fans might enjoy it. Written by famous writer and artist Masaaki Nakayama, this manga is a collection of horror stories that reach the ultimate in horror.

At first, these short horror stories seem separate and unrelated. However, as the reader digs deeper into the manga, connections begin to appear in the most unexpected places.

This may not make sense until you read it, but try not to go gray.

Death note

In recent years, Tsugumi Ohba's Death Note has become a big event in popular culture. It even had a Western adaptation on Netflix. The plot tells that the main character, Light, discovers a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Light tries to use the notebook to make the world a better place, but soon gets drunk on energy and loses his way. It's a fascinating story and one of the best horror manga of all time.

Berserk

Kentaru Miura's Beserk is one of the most famous horror manga of all time. The story makes you believe in one thing before pulling the carpet all the way out by the time you get to the end of the second volume.

The plot follows Guts, a sword-wielding hero whose task is to kill grotesque monsters called apostles. Guts becomes a legendary figure known as the Black Swordsman, but through flashbacks and flash forwards, we learn that the character is much more than that, and not all of it is enjoyable reading.

The manga occasionally touches on philosophical issues that remind us of The Witcher at times. It's also polished to absolute perfection, with every page filled with creepy yet stunningly beautiful detail.

So you have the best scary horror manga you need to find and read!
