How to Copy a Character in World of Warcraft

Here's how to copy a WoW Classic character to a Classic era game world, as well as the answer to the question - Can I have my WoW Classic character in both the Classic era game world and Burning Crusade Classic?

The character copy service will allow you to choose in which game world you want to play with your existing characters: in the game world progress Burning Crusade Classic or in the game world Classic era.

What is character copy?

Replica is the version of your WoW Classic character at the time of the release of the pre-Burning Crusade Classic update. WoW Classic characters that existed before the release of the pre-release patch Burning Crusade Classic, will be automatically copied to the corresponding Classic era game worlds.

The character copy service gives you a choice: you can for free activate a copy of the character in the game world of progress and play the Burning Crusade Classic add-on or You can for free activate a copy of the character in the game world of the Classic era and continue playing WoW Classic. For an additional fee, you can activate both copies.

How to activate a copy?

After the release of the preview update, the Battle.net app will be able to run the Burning Crusade Classic game client or the WoW Classic game client.

When you first log in as a character in any of the clients, you will be prompted to choose whether you want to activate a copy of the character in the Burning Crusade Classic progression game world or the Classic era game world. This selection is free and you will need to do so for every character you owned prior to the release of the Preview.

  • If you activate a character copy in the Burning Crusade Classic game world, the character copy in the Classic era game world will be deactivated and will no longer be playable.
  • If you activate a character copy in the Classic era game world, the character copy in the Burning Crusade Classic progression game world will be deactivated and will no longer be playable.

Would you like both copies to be playable? After you make your initial free selection, you can purchase a paid character copy service to activate an unavailable character copy.

Blizzard Support cannot help if you have activated the wrong copy of a character.

Restrictions

  • Activating a character copy is irreversible. Once a copy has been activated, it can no longer be deactivated.
    • If you activated the wrong copy of a character for free, you can purchase a paid Character Copy service to activate the copy in a different type of game world.
  • Replica is the version of your WoW Classic character at the time of the release of the pre-Burning Crusade Classic update.
    • This includes inventory, bank and mailbox items, and a list of friends.
    • Characters created after the pre-release update will not be copied. This means that you cannot activate a copy of a Draenei or Blood Elf character in the Classic era game world. Additionally, you cannot activate a copy of an Alliance Shaman or a Horde Paladin in the Classic era realm.
    • Game progress you have made on the Burning Crusade Classic progression realm after the Pre-Patch release will not carry over to the Classic era realm.
    • Characters deleted before the release of the Pre-Patch will be copied over and can be activated if you have the opportunity to restore the character.
  • You can hide inactive copies in the character list in the character selection menu. However, inactive copies will still count towards your total character limit for that realm.
    • You can delete and restore copies like any other character.
  • Activating a copy of a character in a Classic era game world will prevent you from selecting a different game world.
    • Your character will remain in the same game world they were in prior to the release of the Pre-Patch. For example, if you played the Flamegor realm in WoW Classic, you can activate a copy of the character in the Classic era Flamegor realm or the Flamegor progression realm, or you can pay to activate both copies.
    • If you want to transfer your character to another game world, you can purchase the service Character Transfer on the character selection screen.
  • It is not possible to transfer characters (whether a copy or a newly created character) between progression game worlds and Classic era game worlds.
    • You can transfer a character from one Burning Crusade Classic progress game world to another Burning Crusade Classic progress game world.
    • You can transfer a character from one Classic era game world to another Classic era game world.
  • Copies of characters activated in the game worlds of the Classic era will remain without a guild. This also applies to guild leaders. All guilds in the game worlds of the Classic era must be recreated.
