We have done a lot of work and gathered information about what we can expect from the gaming industry in 2020. Things should be pretty exciting with the arrival of the next generation of consoles, great new video games and maybe VR 2.0!
In the end, all fads come to an end sooner or later. We already had a passion for early access survival games, MMORPGs, Minecraft clones, even RTS games were reminiscent of their 90s heritage. The biggest fad was the battle royale, but that appears to be coming to an end.
After the initial big boom that fueled many games of this type, the smallest ones fell out and the market was split between a few big players with budgets to keep players interested. But even they are beginning to lose ground under their feet. In December 2018, PUBG had 1,1 million players at its peak. In December 2019, it was already "only" 700 thousand. Apex Legends had a great start, but the momentum was quickly knocked down, and currently the title can no longer threaten Fortnite, which is also slowing down - in September itself, the game's revenue fell by 43%, introducing a pattern of systematic declines that continue throughout the year.
Players are bored and looking for new experiences. The process is slow because there are no new fads -Auto Chess, despite the difficulties, could not achieve such success. However, nature hates a vacuum, and once a bigger hit comes along, it will decide the fate of the battle royale. The biggest games of this type will survive, as WoW has seen the end of MMORPG fashion. But the price for this is very high.
The only unpredictable variable is when this new quirk will appear. Such books are difficult to predict by nature and are often determined by chance. However, the chances of this happening in 2020 are quite high.
