Billy Butcher

William "Billy" Butcher is one of the two main characters (along with Hughie Campbell) of the series Amazon The Boys.

He is the leader of the eponymous vigilante team who seek to destroy Vought and the Seven by any means necessary. Former British Special Forces member turned vigilante; Billy Butcher is as charming as he is cunning. He is a force of nature who can coax almost anyone into anything, either through a smile or through brute force, or sometimes both. He is obsessed with one mission in life: to destroy the superheroes. But this personal vendetta is driven by his hatred for one Supe in particular: Homelander. The Butcher is determined to get revenge on Homelander, at all costs, and he won't let anyone or anything stand in his way.

After the revelation that Becca is alive, Butcher faces a difficult decision when he has to choose between finding Becca or protecting the Boys' safety.

He is played by New Zealand actor Karl Urban as an adult and by Luka Villasis as a teenager.

Detstvo

William Butcher was born in the UK on 16 December 1976 as the first child of Connie Butcher and Sam Butcher. Some time later, his younger brother Lenny Butcher was born.

Due to their father's abusive behavior, both Lenny and Butcher grew up to be dysfunctional people. As an older brother, Billy did everything he could to protect his younger brother from an abusive father. However, over time, Butcher began to develop some of his father's aggressive traits. He ended up beating up his school principal and a student who broke Lenny's nose. Instead of reprimanding his son, Sam rewarded Billy for his aggressive behavior by giving him alcohol.

Fearing his younger brother's mistreatment, Butcher eventually ran away from home to join the British SAS. Although he promised to return, he was unable to get a vacation and Lenny was driven to suicide due to Sam's abuse.

Life in america

At some point, Butcher immigrated to America and married Rebecca Saunders. In 2011, Rebecca was invited to the Christmas party at Vought Tower due to being the Senior Director of Digital Marketing at Vought International and brought Butcher with her. At the party, Butcher dated Homelander.

A few days after the party, Becca met Homelander in a private room, where he raped her. Afterwards, Becca will travel to Vought to figure out how to deal with being pregnant with Homener's child. Vought agreed to help her on the condition that she disappear and be presumed dead.

The contract stated that she was not allowed to tell the truth to anyone, not even. While Billy could tell that there was something wrong with her, he couldn't get her to tell him what was wrong. After her disappearance, Billy believed that she had killed herself.

Join the boys

The Butcher was eventually contacted by Grace Mallory. Grace showed him a video of his wife entering a room with Homelander and then leaving the room upset. Realizing that his wife was raped by Homelander (and that he is responsible for her apparent suicide), Billy agrees to join Grace's team to get revenge on Homelander and Vought.

Career in the CIA

During his time in the CIA and in The Boys, Butcher worked alongside Frenchy and M.M. to fight against Vought's "heroes". He also received Legend's help on many of their occasions, however, after the Electroshock incident, Legend held a grudge against the Butcher for being partly responsible for his lost leg at Electroshock's hands.

Dissolution of The Boys

One night, The Boys attended a meeting with Lamplighter where they blackmailed the hero. To prevent his reputation from being ruined, Lamplighter was forced to become a spy for The Boys. Enraged, Lamplighter continued to burn and kill Grace's grandchildren. Following this incident, Grace retired and disbanded from The Boys. The Butcher will continue his war against Vought alone and break many laws in the process.

First season

Boys reunion

Butcher's initial goal is to round up The Boys and go after Vought International - specifically taking down Homelander, who he is under the impression killed his wife. IN "The name of the game" The Butcher approaches Hughie Campbell after the death of his girlfriend Robin Ward at the hands of A-Train. Billy asks him for help in finding a beetle in the Seven Tower, to which he owes.

After Translucent finds the bug and attacks Huey, Butcher saves Huey and kidnaps Translucent. With nowhere to go, he seeks help from an old friend, Frenchie. Frenchie is initially angry that the Butcher came to see him, however they reconcile and end up concocting a way to kill Translucent; However, Huey is the one who ultimately pulls the trigger.

Shortly after his death, the Translucent Butcher approaches another old friend, Mother Milk, and asks him to rejoin the Boys. Mother's Milk is initially reluctant, but Billy convinces him to return. Soon after this, in "The Female of the Species”, the boys find the female in the basement, having been injected with Compound V for some time. She was eventually accepted into The Boys despite Butcher's feeling that she was inherently dangerous.

Hatred for the Motherland

Billy's hatred of Supes is fueled by his personal hatred of Homelander, leader of The Seven, following the supposed death of his wife, Becky Butcher. Shortly after the disappearance of his wife, Grace, Mallory approached Butcher, showing him CCTV footage of his wife and Homelander together at Seven Tower. Billy believed Homeland was the reason for her disappearance, suggesting that he killed her, fueling a personal vendetta that would last for the next eight years.

Unbeknownst to Billy, Becca was placed in Vought International's witness protection while pregnant and having given birth to a Homelander child - a baby with enhanced abilities, including Homelander's heat vision. IN "You found me» Homelander takes Butcher to see Becca for the first time since her disappearance.

The Butcher: The Short Film

Delivered just after the confrontation, Billy wakes up to find himself on the road outside the restaurant. He enters the restaurant and hurriedly writes as much information as he can remember about Becky's house on the restaurant rug. A live news broadcast on TV awakens him to the reality that he is now believed to be the killer of Madeleine Stillwell and a nationwide manhunt is underway for him. Seeing that the waitress recognizes him on TV, he hurriedly leaves the restaurant and bursts into a vehicle. After driving for some time, he arrives at the home of Jock, a former squadmate from Butcher's days in the British Royal Marine Corps. After a short hello, they drink and reminisce about the good times. Billy shows Jock a picture of his wife and asks for help gathering information from former intelligence contacts such as Higgins and Esquerra. After a brief disagreement, Jock promises to do so. Billy later discovers Jock informing the authorities of his whereabouts. Billy confronts Jock, who reveals that he believes Billy killed Stillwell and probably intends to kill his wife as well. Billy denies this, but Jock cites his past as proof enough. Billy then attacks Jock and they get into a fight which ends with Billy choking Jock to death. As the sirens approach, Billy douses Jock's body with gas and sets his body on fire, leaving him to burn as he drives off. Later, his phone begins to buzz when Frenchie rings.

Second season

Warm welcome

After being at MIA for a couple of weeks, Butcher finally returns to the Boys' hideout. Hughie confronts him, furious that Butcher left them for dead in pursuit of his vendetta against Homelander. But Butcher loses sight of his anger and states that no matter how they all feel, the Boys need him as their leader. The Butcher appears in "Proper Preparation and Planning" at Raynor's funeral, where he meets with Grace to try and get information about Becca. Grace denies his advances and threatens to frame him for the murder of Madeline Stillwell, but Butcher counters the threat by offering to help her figure out who killed Raynor. Once again, Grace reluctantly comes out of retirement to help him. The boys track the Super Terrorist to a costume shop, where they figure out that the terrorist is Kimiko's brother. Butcher ignores the revelations and attempts to shoot the terrorist, but Hughie intervenes, the terrorist turns around, incapacitates the Boys and flees with his sister. When the Boys recover, Butcher is the only one willing to look over them, while everyone else tries to explain why he is so insistent on stalking them. Butcher tells them that his wife Becca is still alive and living in a secret gated community raising Homener's son, and the terrorist is Butcher's "key" to finding Becca. After Kimiko apprehends her brother Kenji, the Boys arrive and capture the terrorist. The Butcher then punches Huey in the jaw, warning him to never get in his way again with Becca or he will kill him.

Easier said than done

In Over the Hill with the Swords of a Thousand Men, Butcher steals a yacht and makes a deal with Mallory to transport Kenji to a rendezvous point in exchange for Grace giving Becky the Butcher's location. As the Boys transport Kenji, there is still little tension between Butcher and Hughie as Hughie punches Butcher for hitting him the last time. Also, when The Boys watch a news article that Compound V is being exposed to the public, all the members except Butcher enthusiastically congratulate Huey. The Butcher then sternly reminds them all that their job is not done and they have to keep an eye on the ball because "shit can go sideways just like that". The Butcher's predictions come true when the Boys intercept a police helicopter, informing them that they are under arrest for stealing a yacht. Butcher tries to reason with the helicopter, however Kenji breaks free of his restraints and tries to attack Butcher and M.M. However, Kenji pushes Kimiko and hits the helicopter with his telekinetic attack instead. As the helicopter crashes, Butcher reasons that they must move quickly or more will come. Huey reluctantly says that the cops may still be alive and need to check the wreckage, but Butcher believes the men are already dead and they will be too if they don't keep moving. The situation only escalates when the yacht is attacked by The Deep, forcing The Boys to transport Kenji using a spare speedboat from behind. While racing to the coastline, a whale blocks their path, so Butcher rams it. Deciding to stay on the move, Butcher orders the Boys to improvise and escape through the nearby Storm Sewer. Huey, however, hesitates and is shocked, but eventually follows him. The Seven arrives, Homelander and Starlight corner Hughie. The Butcher then distracts Homelander long enough for Kenji to go around the corner and neutralize Homelander, burying him in the rubble. The boys fail to retrieve Kenji and transport him, as Kenji is killed by Stormfront.

Is a deal a deal?

The Butcher meets Grace at a memorial shrine for the 59 apartment tenants who were killed by Stormfront. She explains to Butcher that she is having a recurring dream: she is on stage at Carnegie Hall and everyone who was killed by Supe is in the hall just looking at her. Butcher then apologizes for reaching a dead end in the investigation into Susan Raynor's death, but Grace only denies that regret is not enough. Grace then gives Butcher information about an eyewitness who knows about Freedom and tells him to give it to Mother's Milk. Grace stops Butcher and also tells him Becky's location. Confused, Butcher asks why give it to him if he failed to deliver the terrorist. Mallory apologizes to Butcher that she regrets being the reason Butcher stopped looking for Becky, replacing her with a vendetta against Homelander. In addition, Grace says that she would like "one less viewer to look at her."

bittersweet reunions

The Butcher uses the information provided to him to find the facility where Becca lives. The butcher climbs the fence and finds Becca. They have been having sex and making up for lost time for the past 8 years. The Butcher explains that they must escape and is able to use the garbage truck to get them away. When the day comes, Becca reluctantly leaves. She reasons that no matter what happens, Butcher will find some way to get rid of Ryan: "It won't be obvious and it won't be," but he will find a way. The Butcher tries to convince her that he wants to help raise Ryan, but Becca explains that she already knows Butcher's true nature, that he was already broken even before she entered his life. Becky's speculation comes to light when Butcher confesses that she calls Ryan a freak and that they should just hand him over to Vought so they can escape and live in hiding. Becca refuses, stating that she needs to be there for Ryan or Vought will only recreate Homelander. The butcher tries to beg her, but Becca just gets into her car. Butcher tries to stop her, but she activates the alarm and warns him to leave because every guard will arrive at his location in 60 seconds. The butcher leaves the complex disappointed with what his wife has become.

An unlikely ally

After Starlight removes the tracker's chip, she is taken to the Boy's hideout where she meets up with the Butcher. Annie is still mad at Butcher for shooting her with 50. Caliber round while Butcher just brushes off his anger and focuses on the information he has. The boys explore the Wise Grove Center. Butcher, Hughie, and Starlight wait outside the facility to provide an escape for Frenchy, Mother's Milk, and Kimiko while they infiltrate the facility. Starlight makes an entrance while Butcher points his rifle at her head, debating whether or not to shoot. He ultimately decides not to. When Starlight returns and offers the Butcher a hand down, he refuses it. Enraged by Butcher's distant attitude and repeated rude behavior, Annie confronts the Butcher much to Hughie's dismay. She then further fuels the controversy by comparing Butcher to Homelander. Before the argument can end, they are interrupted by the arrival of Stormfront. Once Stormfront leaves, they order the other members to retreat. Unbeknownst to them, the other members have already been spotted and a breakthrough has begun which leads to the patients running away. One of the escaped patients meets Butcher and Starlight and begs them not to harm him. They try to calm the man, but he unleashes a shockwave of EMP, knocking them both backwards and sending the van with Huey inside, flipping over. The butcher kills the patient and the two rush to check on Huey. Hughie appears fine until they notice that he is bleeding from a piece of shrapnel in his stomach. Worried about Huey, Billy and Annie leave the facility to seek medical attention from Huey, leaving the others to fend for themselves.

Annie hitchhikes a car to a stop and begs the driver to help them. The driver notices Butcher's gun and in turn draws a gun and threatens them all, believing they are trying to rob him. Annie draws energy from the man's car and kills him with a blast of energy. They leave the man's body and drive away. Annie confesses that she has become desensitized to civilians getting hurt, earning Butcher's tacit respect. They successfully get Hughie to the hospital and look after him. They then bond over how much they know about Huey and both of them think he's too good for them.

You found me

The butcher receives a call from one of the gang members, who informs him that they have a visitor. The Butcher goes upstairs to see that Becca has tracked him down. Billy hugs her and she tells him to help her because Homelander has taken Ryan. Billy and The Boys then plan how they are going to take out every member of The Seven if they all arrive. However, behind Becky's back, Butcher arranges a secret meeting with Stan Edgar.

The enemy of my enemy

The Butcher meets with Stan Edgar at a restaurant to discuss Ryan. The butcher is first patted and assured that snipers are training on him. Edgar offers him desserts, but the Butcher demands to get down to business right away. Edgar then asks what he knows about Ryan. Butcher explains that he knows that Ryan is Vought's contingency plan in case Homelander goes overboard, and that the "plan" will fail if Ryan contacts Homelander. Butcher then offers his help in solving this problem.

Edgar asks why Butcher thinks he will intentionally betray his "friend". Butcher says he knows Edgar is ruthless because he knows Vought is turning someone like Stormfront into one of America's most beloved superheroes. Edgar justifies his actions with business progress because Stormfront helped improve stock prices. The Butcher then reminds Edgar that Stormfront should be bothering him since he is a black man and Stormfront is a vicious racist and literal Nazi; Edgar categorically admits that she bothers him, but says that she is still a useful tool, and that her ability to incite fear creates conditions ideal for his company's interests. The Butcher then challenges Edgar, asking him how he can control Stormfront, however Edgar denies it.

The Butcher then offers to get Ryan away from Homelander, then he will call Vought and ask them to keep Ryan safe, in turn Vought will better hide him. Edgar agrees and promises to move Becca and Ryan to safety, but Butcher refuses, saying that Becca is staying with him. Edgar explains that Ryan needs his mother, to which Butcher callously tells Edgar to find a new one. Edgar then asks about when Becca will try to find her son. The Butcher tells him to tell her that this is the only way to protect Ryan from Homelander. The Butcher reaches out and makes a deal for Vought to tell him where they are and that he will keep the boy safe. Edgar agrees and shakes hands with him.

Saving Ryan

The moment Homelander leaves the cabin to follow Frenchie's distraction, Billy and Becca move into the safety of Ryan. They pick him up and escort him back to the hanger where the boys are hiding. Billy then changes plan and orders M.M. escort Becca and Ryan out of the fight before that happens. Becca refuses, asking him why the plan has to change. Billy reveals that he secretly made a deal with Stan Edgar to give up Ryan, and in return, he and Becca could live together again. Becca agrees and reluctantly leaves with M.M., however their car is intercepted by Stormfront's arrival. Billy rushes to the car and rescues them. Billy orders M.M. stay with the rest of the Boys and distract Stormfront while he secretly accompanies Becca and Ryan.

Stormfront tracks them down in the middle of the forest and demands that they hand Ryan over to her. Billy refuses, so Stormfront neutralizes him with his plasma lightning. Enraged when Becca stabs her, Stormfront holds Becca in a chokehold. Billy comes to his senses and tries to stop Stormfront by shooting her and hitting her in the head with a crowbar, but this doesn't even bother Stormfront as she continues to choke Becca. Ryan, in a panicked state, goes berserk and uses his laser vision. When Butcher wakes up from the attack, he notices a crippled Stormfront, Ryan weeps apologetically and sees a mortally wounded Becca. The butcher rushes to Becca and holds her by the neck wound, crying out for help, but to no avail. Becca demands that he reassure Ryan that it's not his fault and promise to keep Ryan safe before she closes her eyes and dies. Billy is upset and initially considers killing Ryan out of anger. When Homelander arrives to pick up Ryan, Butcher has a change of heart and refuses to turn the boy in, fully intending to keep his promise to his wife. He keeps Ryan under his protection and ends up turning him over to Grace Mallory and the CIA, who will keep him safe.

The third season

"Revenge"

Butcher still works with Huey on missions to regulate Supes. He finds Hughie in the bathroom and tells him to give him and the Boys the green light for the mission they were working on. Huey gives the green light as long as there is no torture or arson.

The butcher goes to track Supe, named Termite, to a party. The Butcher watches from a hidden camera as the Woman and Frenchy enter the party. Supe accidentally kills someone, so Frenchy, Kimiko, and Butcher come in to catch him. The Butcher manages to catch him in a bag of cocaine to bring back to the Bureau. Butcher argues about crushing Termite to death, but remembers Huey's orders and refrains from doing so.

Later, Butcher goes to visit Ryan, who is staying at a secure house with Grace Mallory. They play Connect Four and talk about Ryan's mom, Becca Butcher. Butcher is now tailing Ryan to keep his promise to Becca.

Maeve visits the Butcher and gives him a file on Soldier Boy. She explains that Soldier Boy was killed by a secret weapon that could even kill Homelander. She tells him that Payback, the super team he used to be a part of, might know what really happened to Soldier Boy. She hands over 3 V-24 capsules to make Butcher Soup within 24 hours.

"The only person in the sky"

The Butcher begins his plan to find out what happened to the Soldier. He tries to recruit MM to return to The Boys for revenge, but MM doesn't give up.

Butcher tracks down former Payback member Gunpowder, who is one of the speakers at the gun show. The Butcher completes his line of weapons and then asks him about his Days of Reckoning as the Soldier's partner. The Butcher argues with him about being abused by the Soldier, but Gunpowder assures him that he was a great man and it was only a rumor. The Butcher pulls out an official complaint made by Gunpowder, which proves the abuse rumors. The Butcher tells him that he will keep the complaint a secret unless Gunpowder tells him how Soldier Boy really died. Gunpowder tells Butcher that he has never been sexually assaulted by a Soldier and he leaves. In the parking lot, Gunpowder shoots the Butcher. The butcher hides and shoots back. The Butcher is stabbed in the leg and grazed across the cheek, but manages to get away alive by shooting at the cars and using their alarm clocks to disguise his escape.

Butcher later goes to meet with Gunpowder about why he is protecting Soldier. Gunpowder shoots the Butcher three times and knocks him to the ground. The Butcher gets up, seemingly unharmed. He took the V-24 that Maeve gave him. The butcher smashes the gunpowder and puts it on the ground. Gunpowder confesses that Soldier Boy used to cloud it and that he didn't die in an accident. Gunpowder tells him that he doesn't know what really killed him, but they were in Nicaragua in 1984 and that he didn't see shit - he was just a kid. He tells Butcher that they were working with the CIA and that Grace Mallory was his employee. Gunpowder begs for mercy, but the Butcher refuses to spare the soup. Butcher repeatedly hits Fiery while the latter is knocked unconscious until Butcher's laser vision splits Fiery's head in half.

"Barbary Coast"

The butcher throws up a V-24 from a post with a hangover. He goes with the Boys to visit Ryan, who needs to be relocated now that Stan Edgar can know his location. While he is there, Butcher runs into Grace about working with Soldier Boy in Nicaragua. She tells him that Nicaragua is ancient history, but Butcher keeps pushing until she finally tells him what happened there.

Butcher continues to grapple with the effects of the V-24, some of which (such as laser eyes) are still in his system. Ryan asks him if he is sick and offers him a saltine cracker. Ryan notices that his heart is beating and his blood smells funny. The Butcher tells Ryan that he can't see him anymore because it's not safe. Ryan grabs him and doesn't let go. The Butcher tells him that he hasn't forgotten what Ryan did to his Becca. Ryan cries and runs off, telling Butcher "I hate you".

“Glorious Five Year Plan”

The Butcher and The Boys fly to Russia to track down the superweapon. They cut off the electricity at the munitions factory. The boys enter and must fend off the guards and the Supe Hampster. They run out of ammo, so Butcher uses his temporary Supe powers to fight back. He opens the safe chamber, thinking it contains a superweapon, but instead he releases the Boy Soldier, who is still alive.

“Last time to look at this world of lies”

Maeve brings Butcher more doses of V-24 and asks what he's going to do with them. The butcher offers Maeve a drink and she tells him that she has been sober for 4 months. She ends up drinking with him. The butcher tells Maeve that they should each leave, referring to Supes. She agrees and they have rough sex.

Butcher, MM and Hughie go to visit Legend to find out where Soldier Boy is. With the help of Legend, they track him to the home of the Crimson Countess. Butcher roofs MM so he gets knocked out so Butcher and Huey can make a deal with Soldier instead of capturing/killing him. They want to use it to kill Homelander.

"Gerogasm"

Huey and Butcher give Soldier Boy food, alcohol, and Benzedrine. The Butcher makes a pact with Soldier Boy - if he can provide him with the location of the remaining members of the Payback team, as well as help him settle into this new era, Soldier Boy will agree to help him destroy Homelander.

At the T&T twins' home, Butcher fights Homelander with Soldier Boy and Hughie. Homelander is surprised to see that Butcher now has powers (from V-24).

"Here comes a candle to light you in bed"

Butcher, Hughie and Soldier Boy go looking for Mindstorm. Soldier Boy advises them to close their eyes if Mindstorm makes eye contact. The butcher confesses that he keeps feeding the soldier boy weed to keep him warm from PTSD, so he stops blowing people up. He and Hughie are both shooting at pace-V.

While searching for the Mindstorm, Soldier Boy falls into a trap that causes an explosion. Mindstorm makes eye contact with the Butcher. The Butcher passes out, trapped in an eternal nightmare, according to Soldier Boy. Hughie tries to wake him up but can't - Mindstorm is the only one who can break him out of him. They leave him.

In his nightmare, Billy's father beats him up, constantly asking "Where is he?" After his father leaves, Billy tells Lenny that it's okay to get out. In another flashback, Butcher is caught selling marijuana at the school. In response, he beats his director. He accidentally hits his brother, but apologizes. Billy's father praises his violence.

Hughie teleports Mindstorm to Butcher's body to help save him. He offers to teleport him away if he just helps the Butcher. In Butcher's mind, Lenny begs him not to leave him alone with his father. Lenny tells the Butcher that he can't take it anymore and he kills himself. The butcher wakes up from a nightmare.

Starlight calls Butcher and tells him that Tempo-V is going to kill the two of them. She tells him that 3-5 doses will kill you and that he needs to tell Hughie. The Butcher hangs up on her and considers telling Huey about it. Instead, Butcher tells him that they should go past the office to get some more and will rally Hughie behind the plan to take down Homelander.

“Instant White Hot Wildlife”

Secretly, Butcher changes his heart and remembers what Lenny told him. The Butcher meets Hughie in a gas station restroom and notices that Hughie looks like his little brother. As Hughie processes the comment, Butcher knocks him out with a punch and leaves Hughie behind. The Butcher and Soldier Boy then proceed to head back to New York, with the latter asking Butcher to wake him up when they arrive.

Maeve and the rest of the Boys show up at Butcher's in New York, demanding to know where Soldier Boy is. Maeve throws out a dose of Novichok and tells them that Homelander must die no matter what. Butcher orders the group to enter the safe while he and Soldier Boy head to Vought.

Butcher, Soldier Boy and Maeve go in search of the Motherland. Homelander tells them that he killed Noir. He tells Soldier Boy that he just wants to talk. Homelander tells Soldier Boy that he is his son, his blood. He brings Ryan out and introduces Soldier Boy to his grandson. Soldier Boy tells him that he wishes he had raised him so he could be a better person. He grabs the Boy Soldier by the throat. Ryan fires a laser at Soldier Boy with his eyes, but is knocked down. Homelander tries to help him. The boy soldier looks like he's going to hurt Ryan so Butcher fights him so he backs off explaining that Ryan is his wife's son.

The doctor later tells Butcher that he has 12-18 months to live after the effects of the temp-V. The Butcher leaves the hospital, smokes, and shows up to reunite with the Boys. Soon after, Butcher and The Boys watch a news report about Victoria Neumann running for Vice President of the United States, and he states that she should leave.

Personality

“You are a bunch of pathetic Supa-worshiping Kunts. I bet you'd thank Supe if they pounced on your mom's best china. Did it ever occur to you that they split your spine or broke your dick just for laughs? Where is your fucking rage?! Your self-respect?! Sitting here in your little stock circle. A little whimpering and moaning. Damn, "letting go". You should be there with the fucking chainsaw following them! Just a bunch of scared fucking rabbits. Soups are all the same. Every damn one of them."
— Billy Butcher

Billy is an incorrigible individual with clear goals and an unrelenting determination to achieve them. Prior to the disappearance of his wife Becky, Billy had a more caring and fun side, although she was aware of his capacity for violence and admitted that he was always one bad day away from beating someone to death in a parking lot. He's not the type to beat around the bush - he's bold and direct, not afraid to do what it takes to avenge his wife. He is also fearless; he confronted Homelander for several reasons, despite being able to flick him like a toothpick. He is also completely willing to sacrifice himself to save others (mainly Becca or a member of The Boys). He had a close relationship with Lenny, his younger brother, often protecting him from his abusive father. Lenny's suicide had a profound effect on him and still hurts Butcher, who is deeply remorseful and blames himself for not standing up to his father.

The darker, more violent nature within him comes from his father and the abuse he inflicted on him as a child, trying to make him tough. However, although he uses it on a daily basis to get the job done, Butcher hates that he is somewhat like his father.

The Butcher harbors a great hatred for Supes, this hatred started after he found out that Homelander raped Bekka. He believes that they are all the same and that they are therefore capable of doing unethical acts, viewing normal people as "collateral damage", therefore they are all enemies in his eyes. When it comes to fighting Supes, Butcher is completely ruthless and shows no mercy, being able to go as far as kidnapping, holding them hostage, or even killing them in cold blood.

Although emotionally closed off, Butcher does show some emotion towards his teammates. He has great respect for Mallory and considers MM a close friend, listening to him and even wanting to put him in charge of watching over Becca, the one thing that was most valuable to him. He is also friends with Frenchie. Billy has a genuine connection with Hughie, who reminds him of his brother Lenny and acts like a conscience. Although he hates the fact that Kimiko and Starlight are Soups and tried to kill both of them, he ends up somewhat warmed up by the fact that they are teammates, though more of Kimiko due to the other members of The Boys standing next to him. her.

When Butcher is finally reunited with Becca, he is unable to accept her son due to his connection to Homelander and the fact that he is Supe. His disgust leads him to make a deal with Edgar to separate them permanently so that Billy can get Becca back. He learns to see Ryan as more than just the son of his enemy after seeing how much he means to Becky. He warns them of his double cross and tells them to leave, though Becca refuses. The Butcher tells her that he couldn't help her raise her son, knowing he was too much like his father and would never want to be with Ryan. When Ryan accidentally kills Becca, she makes the Butcher promise to protect him with her dying breath. However, Butcher is filled with anger and pain and contemplates killing Ryan. Upon Homelander's arrival, his desire to honor his wife's dying wish overpowers his anger at Ryan and protects the boy.

In Season 3, Butcher seems to have calmed down and he has joined the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs under Hughie. He even agrees to follow Hughie's order not to kill Termite, and Butcher kept Termite alive despite his personal wishes. He looks after Ryan, occasionally visiting him to keep in touch with the boy. However, Butcher still hates the Soups and opportunistically unleashes his anger against them. Like Homelander, Butcher is willing to destroy everything and everyone in order to stop being manipulated. Butcher hopes to someday end his mutually hateful vendetta with Homelander and has become willing to do anything to get there, even if that means he now does hypocritically immoral and unethical acts like consuming V24.

Even as a child, Butcher had a violent streak, as he beat up a boy who broke Lenny's nose, and Becca also pointed out that he was always only one bad day away from beating someone to death in a parking lot. He even beat up his principal when he hinted at the possibility of becoming just like his father, which infuriated him.

Powers and abilities

Abilities

“Maybe I pushed you a little. But look at you. Are you afraid of something? No. Are you the strongest motherfucker you know? Yes. Tougher than ever."
- Sam Butcher - Billy Butcher
  • Peak human condition: As a former member of the SAS and trained by Colonel Grace Mallory, Butcher is at peak physical condition and is stronger than the average human. With physical abilities combined with combat training, the Butcher is able to compete with and even occasionally defeat soups with enhanced physical abilities and other superpowers.
    • The Peak of Human Power: He is very strong, strong enough to fight Translucent, destroy Becky's gravestone with a sledgehammer, hit Mesmer's skull with a bathroom sink, choke Jock to death, and hit Hughie with a single punch strong enough to draw out blood. He also threatened to break Huey's legs, a feat that is highly capable given his previous exploits. Even when he was young, Butcher was already very strong, being able to beat up a teacher and a child who had broken his little brother's nose.
    • The Peak of Human Endurance: Butcher is very durable, as he can take hits from Translucents, stand up after being knocked down by an EMP blast capable of sending the van tumbling, being electrocuted by Stormfront's plasma bolts, and surviving when Kenji's building falls on him.
    • Peak human reflexes: Butcher has very good reflexes, he was able to catch a termite in a plastic bag despite Supe being smaller than his thumb and in the middle of a jump towards Frenchy's mouth. He also managed to avoid some of Gunpowder's shots, however, he was also hit by some bullets during the fight, which means he cannot dodge bullets on a consistent basis.
"I'm not a killer."
"Everything is fine. I am".
— Hughie Campbell and Billy Butcher
  • Master combatant: Butcher was trained by both the SAS and the CIA in hand-to-hand combat. His fighting style is a mixture of boxing, as seen against Translucent and Mesmer,, as well as other close combat techniques. He also likely knows Gosinkwai, as this is the fighting style used by modern SAS members. Combining his fighting skills with superior physical abilities, Butcher is able to defeat most ordinary people in unarmed combat, including Jock (a SAS veteran), and even rival superheroes. Aside from his combat skills, Butcher is also able to come up with strategies to gain an advantage in combat, this was best demonstrated when he spat his own blood at Translucent so he could see the invisible hero, allowing him to fight back more effectively. On V24, he was able to dominate Gunpowder in a duel, beating him to death., and he even fought well against Homelander, subduing him with Soldier Boy and Hughie (who was also on V24). He was also able to hold his own against Soldier Boy, one of the most powerful Supe's in the world and a master fighter himself, in one-on-one combat, although he was eventually overwhelmed.
“Look, the Butcher is the guy you want in the shooting war. No problem. But we live in peacetime."
- Victoria Neumann - Hughie Campbell
  • Shooting Expert: As a former member of the British military, Butcher is a highly accurate marksman. He can wield a wide variety of firearms with high efficiency, from pistols to sniper rifles, while suffering from little recoil. With marksmanship skills, Butcher managed to shoot Starlight twice in the chest with his sniper rifle, nearly shooting Kenji with his rifle if not for Huey's intervention. and quickly shot Supe with a pistol. At Fort Bragg, he taught Becca to be a better shot than himself, which meant he was skilled enough to teach others. In addition, Butcher is also very good at using unconventional long-range weapons, being able to kill armed guards with the kid's laser vision and intercept the Homelander's heat vision with his own heat vision. He is also skilled at throwing darts.
“Okay, look, I worked for the feds. I have worked for many people. I am what you might call an independent contractor. You have a problem, you call me, I solve the problem."
- Billy Butcher - Huey
  • gifted intellect: Butcher is very smart, potentially smarter than Stan Edgar, The Seven and all the other members of The Boys. He hid Translucent's remains in a box made of zinc, the only material the Motherland cannot see through.  His intelligence extends to his skills in leadership, deceit and manipulation. After he woke up in Fort Wayne, he was smart enough to write down the details of Becky's house for later investigation. He is very observant, as he saw Black Noir hiding on the roof in the side view mirror, and he also had Stan Edgar stop the killer from hunting him by threatening to expose Ryan Butcher's existence, which would cause Homelander's reputation to suffer. He also easily deduced that Homelander and Stormfront were in a relationship and knew that the cover story behind Soldier Boy's supposed death was bogus and he is familiar with the methods of torture.
    • Master Tactician: The Butcher is a skilled combat strategist, able to think of on-the-spot strategies, such as when he spits his blood on Translucent to see him in combat and uses Baby Soup to cut through several armed guards. united The Boys and inspired them to achieve their goals of eliminating The Seven. He often put an end to bickering between Frenchy and Mother's Milk. Even after he disappeared at the hands of Homelander, Frenchie brought him back to continue running the Boys as he considered him "the real captain". He also compared Butcher to Hannibal, Lee Marvin and Brian Epstein. The Butcher can also be deceitful and manipulative, as he was able to make the criminal think he was a cop, in order to gain access to the club, he attracted Frenchy by making Translucent see his face, and he convinced Mother's Milk to rejoin The Boys by lying about his association with Frenchy. The Butcher, in particular, used Huey's desire to get revenge on A-Train and Supam, which was one of the reasons that led to the murder of Huey Translucent. He was able to identify a camouflaged federal black ops unit van and he tripped over Hughie when he wanted to go after Stillwell while the latter wanted to separate himself to help Frenchy and Mother's Milk. He foresaw that Stan Edgar had several snipers ready to take him out and led the mission to rescue Ryan.
“Going to show you, right? The Bollock people will believe if you scare them enough."
- Billy Butcher - Huey
  • Intimidation: The Butcher is an intimidating person commanding an imposing presence. Mesmer and Jonah Vogelbaum were completely threatened by his thoughts and warnings.
  • Expert Thief: The butcher is very good at stealing, evading the law, managing to steal a boat, My Big Wet Dream, ownership documents for said boat, and Grace Mallory's ledger. He easily stole a nurse's ID at Mercer Hospital in order to break into a day care center. The butcher knows how to split cars, and also seems to know lockpicking, as he is able to break into people's houses without causing a scene.
    • Stealth Master: The Butcher is highly skilled in the art of infiltration and escape. He could break into people's homes, offices, and cars without anyone noticing until he deliberately revealed himself. He is also very good at sneaking up on people while dodging their detection, even managing to dodge Homelander's hearing. and line of sight.
“Y-You is damn impressive. I mean, especially for, you know, one of you. You see, even now, most of the people standing where you are will piss their pants in horror, but you... Of course, your heart is pounding, but you are not afraid. This is anger. This is new to me."
—Motherland
  • Indomitable Will: The Butcher is an extremely determined man, never giving up on his mission to keep the Seven and all the other Soups in line. He has repeatedly confronted extremely powerful beings, from the Translucent to the Motherland. Even when confronted by Homelander and knowing how easily he could kill him, Butcher never once showed any signs of fear and simply continued to threaten him.
  • Experienced Pilot: In addition to his skill in driving cars, Butcher also knows how to operate a speedboat. He killed Lucy, a whale, driving it towards her.
  • Experienced doctor: Although the Butcher is not as skilled as M.M., he also knows how to heal wounds. He was able to heal a bullet wound to his leg that he received from a collision with Gunpowder.

Powers by V24

"I've leveled the fucking playing field this time."
— Billy Butcher in Mother's Milk
  • Superhuman strength: The Butcher possesses immense superhuman strength while under the influence of V24. He can send Gunpowder flying with a single blow., effortlessly crush a person's neck with one hand and repel Ryan's own superhuman strength. He is strong enough to land significant hits on Homelander and Soldier Boy, he can also hold off Homelander with Soldier Boy and Hughie (who also used the V24).
  • Superhuman durability: After taking V24, the Butcher becomes remarkably durable and can take an extreme amount of punishment without suffering any physical injury. He is bulletproof, came out unscathed after being sprayed with bullets by a group of Russian soldiers, received no damage after being shot in the torso with gunpowder, was unfazed when Homelander blasted him with his heat vision, and was barely hurt when the two of them got into a vicious fight, suffering only a small cut on his left cheek. While fighting Soldier Boy, Billy was able to withstand his blows, though he was shown to take more damage than Soldier Boy.
  • Superhuman reflexes: Under the influence of V24, the speed of the Butcher reaction increases to inhuman levels. He was able to dodge some of the Homelander's attacks during their Battle of Gerogasma.
  • thermal vision: Butcher is able to generate golden thermal energy from his eyes and can project it outward as powerful beams. These blasts of energy proved to be incredibly powerful, as they were able to easily cut Fiery's head in half and sever his car, splitting it completely in two. Although he initially lacked a good understanding of this ability, to the point where using it damaged his eyes, by the time he took the second dose of V24, he was able to use his heat vision with perfect control and without any sense of pain. Butcher's heat vision also proved to be powerful enough to knock Homelander to the ground after being punched in the chest and even block out the latter's own heat vision, albeit with noticeable strain from the Butcher that Homelander did not share. Butcher's thermal vision was also able to leave a wound on Soldier Boy's face using a continuous beam.

Weak sides

Biological

  • Deterioration of health: Due to repeated use of the V24 compound, which is known to cause brain damage over three to five doses, Billy Butcher is terminally ill. His attending physician stated that any further attempt to treat his condition would only negatively impact his quality of life without prolonging it. His doctor also suggested that he had twelve months to live, possibly up to eighteen. Billy was also seen to be significantly weakened in his last appearance, but whether this is due to his failing health or recent surgery to treat brain lesions (or both) is unknown.

Equipment

  • Beretta 92FS Inox: The Butcher used his sidearm to threaten Madeleine Stillwell.
  • Beretta 92FS: Butcher later used a new side weapon to kill EMP Supe and attempted to fire it at Stormfront but was unsuccessful.
  • Colt M4A1: The Butcher used a carbine to ward off the shuddering Void Sharks attacking him and the Boys. He later brought him on a mission to rescue Ryan.
"You look good".
"Yes, no, thanks to the 50-caliber cartridge that you pumped into my chest."
"Well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
— Billy Butcher and Starlight

  • Serbu BFG-50A: The Butcher Sniper Rifle is a .50 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a red laser sight. He loaded it with a diamond projectile in an attempt to shoot Translucent to pierce his skin, but it ricocheted. He later used it in an attempt to kill Starlight by shooting her twice in the chest, to no avail due to her powers. He brought the same sniper rifle to provide surveillance for the infiltration of the Sage Grove Center, with Starlight in his scopes.
  • Scrap: The Butcher attempted to use this weapon against Translucent, but was unable to connect due to the latter's invisibility. Butcher also used his crowbar against Stormfront when she was turned on her back, but the blows from the crowbar had no effect on Stormfront. He later used it to destroy a fuse box for a Russian military compound.
  • Taser rod: The butcher used a taser rod to electrocute a translucent.
  • Fire poker: Butcher used fire poker against Black Noir.
