Since the launch of Fortnite Season 8, there has been a growing number of complaints from players about poor "optimization" due to latency or frame rate issues - here's how to get the best performance settings in Fortnite.
How to improve FPS in Fortnite on PC
It is extremely important to have a smooth picture in any game, and this is achieved by increasing the frame rate per second (FPS). This determines how often a new frame appears on the screen, which will greatly affect how "smooth" the gameplay looks.
Fortnite PC players can choose from a variety of graphical options to provide higher FPS. While turning everything to the absolute minimum might seem like an obvious choice, some settings are also important to your ability to play the game well, so here are the best settings for both high FPS and keeping quality at an optimal level.
You will notice that "View Distance" is still in epic state while the other settings are off. This is because View Distance directly affects your ability to see opponents and objects at long distances.
How to get high FPS in Fortnite on PS4 and Xbox One
For the console, things are a little easier. In fact, it's so simple that there's really only one setting you want to pay attention to. On the Game tab, make sure 60 FPS is set to On.
This will force the game to prioritize 60fps, ahead of any visual luxury.
How to reduce lag in Fortnite on PC
Another important factor in ensuring good performance while playing Fortnite is, of course, latency, or in other words, any delay you may experience on the game server. Here are some simple tips to avoid internet lag on PC:
Update the latest network drivers.
Use an Ethernet (wired) connection, not a Wi-Fi (wireless) connection.
Reboot your router - a quick turn off/on can give it a boost.
Close other bandwidth-hungry apps and devices such as Chrome, Origin, Steam
Select the geographic server closest to you.
Check the status of the Fortnite server.
Reinstall Fortnite - if none of the above worked, you can always try a complete reinstall of the game.
You may also experience lag because your PC's processor is overloaded. Use the task manager (ctrl + shift + esc) to close all unnecessary applications running in the background. Keep in mind that in order to launch Fortnite, you will need to run the Epic Games Launcher.
How to Reduce Lag in Fortnite on PS4 and Xbox One
Many of the tips above will also apply to console players, with the exception of a couple:
Use an Ethernet (wired) connection, not a Wi-Fi (wireless) connection.
Reboot your router - a quick turn off/on can give it a boost.
Close other bandwidth control devices i.e.
Watch videos on YouTube or Twitch.
Select the geographic server closest to you.
Check the status of the Fortnite server.
Reinstall Fortnite - if none of the above worked, you can always try a complete reinstall of the game.
Hopefully future updates from Epic Games will improve game optimization for all players, but for now, if you're having issues, hopefully some of the tips above will help resolve some of them.
