Electromagnetic waves are effective against COVID-19

Scientists from Israel and Russia have proven the effectiveness of electromagnetic waves in the fight against coronavirus.

Israeli scientists have developed a method for instant disinfection of surfaces, and their Russian colleagues have developed a way to reduce the viral load. Both developments are based on electromagnetic non-ionizing radiation, but the approaches of the creators are different.

Radio wave disinfection

A group of Israeli scientists from Ariel University developed a new way to get rid of coronavirus using two-millimeter electromagnetic radio waves. The method involves the disinfection of surfaces, which takes only two seconds. In addition to such a short processing time, this method has a number of other advantages: it is not dangerous for people, does not harm surfaces and is suitable for processing even electronic equipment.

“This type of radiation operates in millimeter wave mode, which means that the wavelength is about three millimeters. For comparison, cell phone radiation has a wavelength of about 30 centimeters, and a microwave oven has a wavelength of about 12 centimeters,” explained professor and study co-author Moshe Einat. Such millimeter waves are already used in medicine. For example, they can effectively and specifically fight tumors and kill cancer cells.

The idea that electric waves can be used to destroy viruses came to Professor Einat and his team after the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic. The scientists saw the potential use of radiation for temperature rise and disinfection and began research with molecular biologist Dr. Gaby Gerlitz. At the moment, the development of Israeli scientists does not involve the use of electric waves for the treatment of patients with coronavirus.

Electromagnetic therapy

Russian scientists have also proposed using electromagnetic waves to fight the coronavirus, but their method is no longer intended only to remove the virus from surfaces or disinfect the air, but also to reduce the viral load in people. Innovative domestic development formed the basis for the creation of a non-invasive electromagnetic apparatus "TOR".

It is noteworthy that Israeli scientists are also investigating a similar technology: in May of this year, опубликовано a scientific study that proposes the use of electromagnetic waves in order to promote the recovery of patients.

The TOR device was also originally intended for disinfection: it was patented and certified by the EurAsEC and Rospotrebnadzor as an air purifier for various types of premises six months before the publication of Israeli scientists. However, domestic developers were able to adapt the parameters of the device and set such values of the electromagnetic field that would be safe for living organisms.

Test

The effectiveness of the device has been confirmed by a number of tests: an extensive blind randomized study has already been conducted on patients with moderately severe coronavirus, which found that among patients treated with the TOP device, 87 percent had a negative test for COVID-19 already on the fifth day of therapy, in while in the control group and in the placebo group, 64 and 57 percent remained PCR positive, respectively.
In addition, in the group treated with TOR, patients improved in terms of respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation and blood biochemical parameters. The safety of the device was confirmed and verified by Roszdravnadzor, and in September of this year it was registered as a medical device.

The TOR device has been successfully used in covid hospitals, in particular in St. Petersburg, where its use helped improve the dynamics of recovery with the release of hospital beds. In one of the clinics in Vladivostok, after the installation of the equipment, the minimum indicator of the release of beds was fixed and remains at the level of 8 days, which is 3-5 days less than the average value for the region and other subjects.

Operating principle

The developers explain that the operation of the device is based on the electrical nature of the mechanism for introducing the virus into a living cell. In recent advanced research the ability of viruses to communicate with each other was established in order to coordinate their actions when attacking cells. Exposure using electromagnetic waves creates interference in their "communication", disrupting the electromagnetic balance of the pathogen when it attacks the cell. Because of this, the process of pathogen replication slows down, and the immune system gets time to develop a protective response.

A weak electromagnetic field, safe for a living organism, is transmitted to the human blood and lymph, which are ionic solutions. Thus, the reduction of virulence is achieved with the help of substances that are not alien to the organism. The Tor method affects clusters of bubstons in the blood and lymph, which are then carried throughout the body, transferring weak electromagnetic fields. This ability of bubston clusters was described in scientific articles by the method developer and scientists from the Institute of General Physics. Prokhorov RAS and Bauman University in the scientific journal "Polymers".

Prospects

The studies of both Russian and Israeli specialists have a wide range of applications. So, the technology of a team of scientists from Israel has already been tested on poliovirus and has proven effective for other pathogens, in addition to coronavirus. “We wanted to prove that the method is effective for viruses in general,” explained Dr. Gerlitz. According to him, the team will explore the possibility of using the development for water disinfection. Domestic know-how, in turn, has the potential to be used not only in the treatment, but also in the prevention of the disease.
