Animal Crossing: New Horizons - How to Unlock the Entire Island

Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing New Horizons gives you a whole new island to explore - but not all at once! Many areas of your island will be closed once the game has started. Here's how to unlock them so you and your villagers can explore and build whatever your heart desires!

First of all

At the very beginning of the game, you will be limited to one area of the island (as you may have noticed on the mini-map of the game) - while you can get to the square, airport and beach from here, your path to other areas will be blocked by rivers and rocks that cut through the island . This means that you are somewhat limited as to where you can build your first home. Villagers who join later will have slightly more options for placing their houses, as they will be able to borrow equipment from other players to gain access to these areas. After building a few bridges and ramps, the whole island can become accessible even without using any equipment!

You may also see cliffs and rivers blocking access to certain areas on some of the other islands you visit. The same tools you use on your home island will also help overcome these obstacles and make your visits to the island more rewarding.

Pole use

At the beginning of the game, Tom Nook will ask you to collect fish and bugs that you find around the island. Give him samples of five different species and he will reward you with several different traits and items, eventually summoning Blathers and asking him to come to the island. You will be tasked with setting up a tent for the Blazers and he will arrive the next day. After you talk to Blathers after that, he will tell you about his plans for a museum on the island and give you recipes for some new tools so you can help him. This includes a jump pole that allows you to jump over bodies of water like rivers. The pole is equipped like any other tool, so you can now jump into any of the streams blocking your path by approaching while carrying the jump pole and then pressing the A button. Unlike most other tools, this one will not break, so you can use it as often as you like without fear of getting stuck. if you really manage to get stuck somewhere on the island (for example, if you threw away your jump pole), you can still call the rescue service on your NookPhone so you can return safely.

Use the Ladder

Like rivers, ledges can be bypassed with a tool - in this case, a ladder. This ability will be unlocked later in the game as you will have to meet and invite some animals from the islands you have visited with Dodo Airlines. Traveling to other islands to find both animals will require quite a few Nook Miles (2000 per trip, with the first trip being free), so it may take you a while to save up.

The request to move a second animal cannot be completed without using flowers as a crafting material, so Tom Nook will give you the ability to create stairs. Using the stairs, you will be able to reach the elevated areas of the island and collect the wild flowers growing there, which in turn will allow you to add more animals to your island. The ladder works similarly to the jump pole - it is equipped and can be used with the "A" button, but it does not break.

Ramps and Bridges

While you will be able to access areas behind streams or over cliffs once you create a jump pole and stairs, it's much easier to find a permanent solution - it will also allow other animals and new inhabitants to cross between different areas of the island. You can start building bridges to cross streams and ramps to access the highlands once you've converted the Resident Services tent into your own building. Here, Tom Nook will help you with the infrastructure of the city, and you can start new projects to build bridges or ramps by talking to him. They are placed more or less the same as buildings, and you can review each project before finalizing it for construction. Once you have started a project, Lloid will appear on the site to collect donations of bells (from you and any other players on the same island) until the target number of bells is reached. The next day, there will be a bridge or slope at your chosen location. Since only one structure can be built per day, it will still take a long time to make most of the island accessible in this way, and you will still need to keep a jump pole and ladder in hand when traveling to other islands via Dodo Airlines!
