Top 10 PSP games of all time

From Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, here are the best games on the PSP.

The PSP represented the PlayStation's first major foray into the portable world. As the most powerful handheld at the time, it introduced a range of memorable games based on existing PlayStation franchises, impressive third-party support, and a format that has stood the test of time and become a hallmark of the technology. Universal Media Disc since.

Okay, UMDs may still not be quite the industry standard, but the PSP has still delivered a number of incredible games throughout its lifetime. Looking back at this little console, we decided to put together a list of the top ten PSP games of all time, prioritizing games that used the hardware and represent the ingenuity of the developers to bring some amazing franchises to portable life. So, without further ado, here are our top 10 PSP games of all time.

Top 10 PSP Games

10. Daxter

Daxter is a platform video game developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is part of a series Jak and Daxter. The game takes place from the perspective of Dexter, between Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy и Jack II. As of June 2008, the game has sold 2,8 million copies and has been critically acclaimed.

The gameplay remained similar to what was in the main games of the series. However, most of the Heaven City location has become unavailable for free visiting. There is still a choice of tasks to complete, but the game has become somewhat linear.

Character control has not changed significantly. Transport became unavailable for use (except for story missions). A new "Sleep" mode has appeared, in which the character will have to go through a mini-game, several levels with different plots, for the passage of which you can get bonuses. The "Bug Battle" mode was also introduced. In this mode, the player selects their bug and competes against an opponent in a rock-paper-scissors fashion. The player who spends all their health loses the battle.

According to the storyline, the Daxter game is an interval between the events of the first and second parts. Jack and Dexter get to Haven City, but Jack is immediately grabbed by the guards and sent to prison. Dexter vows to find him. Dexter is spotted by Ozmo, the owner of a small insect extermination company. He takes Dexter to work. Working as a "bug exterminator", Dexter learns a lot for himself, including the fact that those insects that he exterminates are not ordinary bugs at all. In addition, Dexter is moving forward in search of his friend, discovering over time that everything is not as simple as it seems at first glance.

9. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Fast forward to 2005 and Rockstar recently released three industry-changing GTA games. Back then, the idea of playing a fully realized open-world GTA on a portable device was a pipe dream...until Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.

It took us back to the moment and feel that made GTA such an iconic franchise in the PS2 era, complete with a brand new story and missions, in a prequel to GTA 3. And it was a good enough game that it was ported to PS2 later and held up as own console-quality GTA release.

8. God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Ready At Dawn has been one of the most consistent developers throughout the life of the PSP. And the studio's 2010 action game, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, is another game you should buy if you have a PSP. Ghost of Sparta didn't change the gameplay formula of another PSP-exclusive God of War Chains of Olympus much, but it didn't have to, instead refining and improving what came before.

And the legacy of Ghost of Sparta is ultimately the best game out there because of the pacing and cinematic storytelling that deftly captures the feeling of playing God of War in the palm of your hand.

7 Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

It took us roughly 14 years before Kingdom Hearts fans got a full numbered sequel to Kingdom Hearts 2. Despite this colossal gap, many new Kingdom Hearts games debuted, including the only one to grace the PSP, Birth by Sleep. But even though this is the franchise's only inclusion on a portable device, it marks one of the best entries in the Kingdom Hearts series, as well as on the PSP itself.

Square Enix has cleverly adapted the series' controls and core gameplay mechanics (with a few new additions) to take advantage of Sony's handheld. The soundtrack is also one of the best in the Kingdom Hearts series, with writing and story to match, adding a surprising amount of depth and lore. Being born in a dream is an essential experience for Kingdom Hearts and PSP.

6 Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Although it was part of the mostly ill-advised "Final Fantasy VII Compilation" umbrella that sprang from the wild success of the original FF7, Crisis Core stands head and shoulders above the rest of those projects. Not only does it recontextualize some of the most beloved JRPG characters in history, it also provides a great action RPG in its own right.

It can sometimes dig too deep into the usual excesses of the genre (see characters quoting poetry in the middle of battle), but Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an example of a prequel done right, especially now that its influence will be seen in future Final Fantasy VII games. Remake, including the latest Crisis Core Remake for PS5.

5. Lumines

Lumines was arguably the greatest puzzle game since Tetris. Director Tetsuya Mizuguchi cleverly blended a few tetris-and-block-matches to the rhythm of Lumines' incredible custom soundtrack. The result was a completely unique experience that could oscillate between an all-soft and zen equivalent of Guitar Hero (which didn't come out for another year).

But it wasn't just "Tetris with cool music" - it also worked great, the themed visuals and backgrounds in the mix, and matched the music to create a truly touching experience. That Lumines is still thriving today, many years and many platforms later, is no surprise. But it got its start on the PSP and it was one of the system's best games.

4. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable

On a platform loaded with great RPGs, Persona 3 Portable is arguably the best. An updated version of the PS2 game that first popularized the series in the west, it features a group of Japanese high school students attending classes during the day and exploring the mysterious "Dark Hour" at night. In this 100-hour adventure, you make friends, join social clubs, and try to find out what lies at the top of Tartarus while rocking to one of the best soundtracks in the series.

With many quality-of-life improvements and a brand new storyline featuring a female protagonist - a first for the series - it's an amazing experience. Unfortunately, Persona 3 is hard to find these days, but if you can get a copy on PSP or Vita, it's worth it.

3. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

When veteran hunters regale you with tales from the nightmares of yesteryear, that's probably the game they're thinking of. As a sort of "definitive edition" of Monster Hunter 2, Unite gave players the opportunity to experience exciting new hunts against now-iconic monsters such as Nargacuga and Ukanlos.

Various quality-of-life improvements, such as the introduction of the Felyne Comrade system, which has since evolved with each new record, have made Unite a joy to play with friends via the wireless Ad-Hoc PSP connection. If PSP nostalgia can have a face, playing countless hours of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite would be a very strong contender.

2. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Some might say that Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together deserves this spot on the list, but the original Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of the best grid-based RPGs of all time. With a heartbreaking story, quick menu-driven combat, and endless replay value, War of the Lions isn't just a port of the original game. The PSP update includes a new translation, voiced cutscenes, new quests, new characters (including Balthier from Final Fantasy XII) and the entire fantasy story in a portable format.

A game to tinker with endlessly, Final Fantasy Tactics is perfect for handheld games, as you can pause longer battles or spend hours polishing a single card to max out job classes. An RPG that can be unbalanced in the best possible way, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions remains the gold standard for tactical RPGs and stands out even among its numbered counterparts.

1. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a self-contained, powerful Metal Gear experience despite living on such a small, unassuming system. Following the events of Snake Eater, Peace Walker prioritized gameplay with two game modes: Mission and Mother Base.

The first was the main campaign/story and was told in digestible, mission-sized pieces, while the second expanded upon the army management gameplay that was teased in Portable Ops and would later be expanded upon in The Phantom Pain. In this regard, Peace Walker bridged the gap between the original and all future parts of Metal Gear Solid.

After playing through all that single player content, there was a multiplayer mode that allowed you to play cooperatively with friends or in deathmatch, and there was a ton of extra content that you could download using the PSP network via the Extras menu.

Of course, this download was more cosmetic, like different outfits for the characters or additional music for the Walkman (hey, does anyone remember this?), but you can easily lose yourself in what seemed like an endless amount of goodness contained in such a tiny packaging. Peace Walker was and still is one of the greatest Metal Gears of all time.

And that's our list of the top 10 PSP games of all time! Do you agree with our list or do you think we missed something? Do you still have any UMDs gathering dust on the shelf? Let us know in the comments below.
